ADC: Sabra and Shatila – 44 Years of an Open Wound + news

Dr Mark Perlmutter of Rocky Mount, NC, an orthopedist, will speak by video about what he saw and experienced volunteering (?) in Gaza, including the retrieval of the body of "a revered and prominent Palestinian orthopedist who died in an Israel prison in April, 2024."   Palestinian  professor and author Amna Dmeida will read "I Am Now a Revolutionary Woman: The Fight to Recover Dr. Adnan Al-Bursh."  This Community Forum, moderated by Mark Davidson, will be Sunday, October 25th, 9:15-10:15am in the UCCH's Fellowship Hall (1321 MLK., Jr Boulevard in Chapel Hill).

Dr Adnan Al-Bursh ( عدنان البرش,  ʿAdnān al-Bursh) – September 17, 1974 in Jabalia, Gaza – around April 19, 2024 at Israel's Ofer Prison, in the West Bank; due to torture while in the Prison? Dr al-Bursh was the chief orthopedist at Al-Shifa Hospital, the largest medical facility in Gaza:   en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adnan_al-Bursh

The BBC's TV news on October 22nd (?) didn't have a problem accusing the RSF in Sudan of systematically targeting hospitals, but they have said little or nothing about Israel.  What happened to the medical facilities in Gaza and in other countries attacked by Israel?

Beside invading Lebanon, besieging and bombing Beirut (Reagan was moved to object and arranged a ceasefire in August 1982, unlike Biden more recently?  Jane Fonda went with the Israeli military to Beirut and voiced her support for Israel?), and allowing the Massacre after the PLO guerrillas had withdrawn (as had been agreed under the ceasefire), Israelis looted in West Beirut; stole a 25,000 volume Arabic, English, and Hebrew research library belonging to the PLO; destroyed or stole cabinets, desks, telephones, a printing press, etc.; and left anti-Palestinian graffiti, reminiscent of recent years in Gaza.  Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin said "Goyim kill goyim and they blame the Jew" (echoed by Greg Palast regarding allegations of subversion by Mossad in Iran, leading to the riots about a year ago; NPR, the BBC, etc. don't have a problem referring to demonstrations in France in 2026 as "riots," but elsewhere there are something like 'armed protests/protesters' and a "reckoning" or "uprising," and 2021 had an "insurrection" in DC).

Sabra and Shatila — 44 Years of an Open Wound

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

September 16, 2026

media[at]adc[ ]org

Today, 44 years later, we remember one of the darkest massacres in Lebanon’s modern history.

From September 16–18, 1982, Palestinian refugees and Lebanese civilians were massacred in the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps in Beirut. Most of the victims were Palestinian refugees, including women, children, and the elderly. More than 3,000 people were massacred in cold blood.

Lebanese Phalangist militias carried out the killings, while Israeli forces controlled and surrounded the camps and had effective control over the area. Israeli forces permitted the Phalangist militias to enter the camps, and Israeli commanders received warnings about the danger of bloodshed but failed to take adequate measures to stop it.

The United Nations Security Council condemned the “criminal massacre of Palestinian civilians.” The UN General Assembly subsequently condemned the massacre in the strongest terms and declared it an act of genocide.

Israel’s own Kahan Commission of Inquiry later found the State of Israel indirectly responsible for the massacre. It found then-Defense Minister Ariel Sharon personally responsible for ignoring the danger of bloodshed and revenge and for failing to take appropriate measures to prevent it. The commission recommended his removal as Defense Minister. Sharon was elected prime minister a few years later.

Yet 44 years on, meaningful criminal accountability for those responsible remains elusive.

Sabra and Shatila was not an isolated tragedy. Its victims were overwhelmingly Palestinian refugees who had already endured dispossession and exile in the 1948 Nakba. Their lives were taken in the very place where they had sought refuge.

We remember the victims.
We remember the families who continue to carry this loss.
We remember because history must never be erased, minimized, or rewritten.

Sabra and Shatila remains a profound reminder of the consequences of impunity and of the imperative to protect civilian life and uphold human rights without exception.

On this solemn anniversary, ADC honors the victims and stands with their families and with the Palestinian and Lebanese communities in calling for justice, accountability, dignity, freedom, and the realization of the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people.
