Celebrating 90 Years of Social Security
Dear [ ],
On August 14, 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed The Social Security Act into law.

Social Security was the centerpiece of FDR’s New Deal that ushered in an era of strengthening the social safety net. A reckoning took place following the Great Depression, and a promise of a fairer, more just society was borne of that era – a promise that the world’s richest nation would take care of its most vulnerable.
Over the years, we’ve seen the promise of that era dismantled piece by piece at the hands of both parties of war and Wall Street.
Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent recently boasted that Donald Trump’s so-called “Big Beautiful Bill” contained a “back door” channel to privatizing Social Security. Trump’s DOGE slashed the Social Security Administration’s budget by 12%, cutting crucial staff, while its then-top henchman, multi-billionaire Elon Musk, sneeringly called this lifeline for the most vulnerable a “Ponzi-scheme.”
But it’s not just Trump and the Republicans who have sought to eliminate Social Security as we know it. Democrats like Joe Biden and Barack Obama have advocated for draconian cuts under the guise that they were necessary to “save” Social Security, but here’s the truth: Social Security doesn’t need to be in crisis! The Green Party calls for eliminating the cap on income tax to fund Social Security, which would keep it solvent for generations to come.
Today we celebrate 90 years of Social Security. The Green Party is committed to making sure this vital program will be stronger than ever in its next 90 years!
In Solidarity,
The Green Party of the United States
