[Online August 17th: icssmarx.org/80-years-after-the-us-bombing-of-hiroshima-and-nagasaki-are-we-on-the-verge-of-another-nuclear-war-gerry-condon-august-17-2025-1030-am-pacific-time/ ]
[Sadako Peace Day 2025: www.wagingpeace.org/31st-annual-sadako-peace-day ]/
NPR and the BBC had stories on the 80th anniversary, and explicitly stated that the US used nuclear weapons against Japanese cities (with input from the UK, under the Quebec Agreement? – en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_bombings_of_Hiroshima_and_Nagasaki ?), and they gave seemingly high casualty estimates, but it still feels like they downplayed it. A BBC reporter in Hiroshima around August 6th even said something like, in an era of receding "globalization" and --, Hiroshima's call for nuclear abolition and peace basically appears anachronistic and -- , and the media noted that Japan is 'protected' by the USA's nuclear umbrella. Maybe I missed further coverage. Regarding Nagasaki, a BBC headline early this morning noted that 'many analysts' think that the nuclear bombings "hastened the end of the Second World War." This Week in People's History couldn't say that the bombings didn't bring WWII to an end, and doesn't mention the USSR at all: portside.org/2025-08-04/week-peoples-history-aug-6-12-2025
[Normalizing "Western" nuclear warfare, in the near future? The evening of August 14th a BBC headline mentioned Japan's commemoration of its August 15, 1945 surrender, following the atomic bombings (no mention of the role of the USSR and Mongolia), which is true, but gives the impression that the surrender happened (only?) because Hiroshima and Nagasaki were destroyed.]
[A very Russophobic (Tsarist Russia allegedly committed serious crimes against native people back in the 19th century or earlier, and the US and other colonial powers have done nothiing?), pro-Zelensky, anti-Trump, indigenous (?) woman from Stand Up Alaska (?) was interviewed on the BBC on the 15th. And then a UN expert on "indigenous" issues and a Crimean Tartar [Tatar], even. Israel claims to be an indigenous country. About two days ago the BBC 'explained' how the Ukraine War began in 2014 [and again on the 15th!] and NPR's Morning Edition (and more??) has been even heavier on Ukraine discussion for around a week (and with very little on any other ongoing war). NPR has an entire reporting team in Alaska. A cold and isolated place for a meeting? Ukrainians living in western Ukraine need to be very careful not to go against Zelensky or the Azov types... Give Alaska back to Russia, someone said. Then Russia could bother the Canadian imperialists too. The hidden history of US-Russia-UK relations – I read a claim that Tsarist Russia sold Alaska to the USA in th 19th century to cause problems for the British in western Canada. And Russia threatened to get involved if the UK and France intervened in our Civil War on the side of the CSA.] [What about the issue of NATO, not territory? They claim that Russia is fighting for empire, and won't be able to defeat Ukraine. NPR had something on the morning of the 15th about the summit meeting being one-sided, as if the US isn't a party to the conflict, as in the Middle East.]
Reminiscent of the conquest of Mexico/Tenochtitlan (now Mexico City), even the rain afterward, August 13th or 21st in 1521; the firebombing of cities in Europe and Asia before the nuclear bombings, and the levelling of Gaza today (or: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warsaw_Ghetto_Uprising in the spring of 1943?? The WWII Siege of Leningrad?)?
If I'm not mistaken, the flash from a one megaton nuclear explosion (a relatively small nuclear weapon ) relatively far away in downtown Raleigh would be enough to set parts of Durham on fire and at least injure anyone unlucky enough to be outside, ignoring any other effects. Weather conditions would probably influence the amount of damage and the fallout would probably blow away from here. There are war industries in RTP and the huge military base not far south in Fayetteville (the government of North Carolina values military spending). Or the other side could just aim for population centers, as happened in WWII [(military sites were targeted in Hiroshima and probably also in Nagasaki, but the cities weren't going to be spared, and strategic nuclear weapons have much more yield or power today)]. The weapons are still there and ready to go on a hair trigger, but people mostly stopped protesting about them after the 80's. We might be fortunate if the weapons are too old and don't work anymore, but Obama got to work on fixing that problem, for something like one trillion dollars. The nuclear personnel have also had some scandals and lost or dropped nuclear weapons, including in the Carolinas and I think Georgia, and in the UK, Spain, etc.

An amazing hidden story from the history of science and another blow for NASA and Co., if true: worldbeyondwar.org/how-the-military-industrial-complex-chose-what-killed-the-dinosaurs/
Last week (?) NPR's evening Fresh Air program interviewed the author of an article claiming that Elon Musk, apparently named for a benevolent (?) Martian dictator in a sci-fi novel, has derailed NASA and American ideals in outer space – but wasn't NASA put on this neoliberal course under Obama or earlier, in which NASA no longer designs and operates crewed rockets, or at least not rockets from the ground? And I thought that NASA was supposed to have been aiming for in-person human exploration of Mars for decades, but now the US is spending a huge amount to have a second race to the Moon, over some amount of frozen water. It's not like they want to to go back to the Moon to do scientific research, such as astronomy free from the Earth's atmosphere and interference from human activity, or science isn't what they put first in the media, and wouldn't going to a near-Earth asteroid be better preparation for a mission to another planet? On the other hand, they would probably want to gift it to a corporation for mining. Even if there is lunar water ice, they would still have to get it into orbit if they want to use it beyond the Moon. I think the author was wrong on some of the reasons Mars is inhospitable to life, though. Maybe the nearest extraterrestrial life is in the clouds of Venus and humans should go there next, not Mars (assuming that the Apollo landings weren't a hoax; NASA is having a lot of trouble repeating the 20th century feat with 2025 technology). The Congress ruled out cooperating with Russia and/or China in space to save money and share know-how (during the Obama administration?), though astronauts could only get to and from the ISS on Russian rockets for a long time after the Space Shuttle had to be retired.

A hot Jupiter-type planet may have been found orbiting alpha Centauri, a mere four light years away, more or less (4.3 ly). The cloud of comets orbiting the Sun is thought to extend far into space, and maybe the outer edge of the triple star Rigel Kentaurus system isn't that far beyond. NPR's report was wrong about alpha Centauri's brightness, though. Rigel Kentaurus must not be visible this far north. They also said some strange things about Armenia and Azerbaijan in a news brief ("Soviet satellites," and they cooperated to become independent?; so, North Carolina is a "satellite" of the USA? Skimming Wikipedia, there has been violence between the two peoples since before independence).
The discovery of one or more new planets orbiting the Sun might be close. Nemesis?

Remembering Hiroshima and Nagasaki
Dear [ ],
This August marks the 80th anniversary of one of the darkest times in human history – the United States initiated the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, followed by another atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki on August 9th.
["Photo of the mushroom cloud over Hiroshima on August 6, 1945"]
In Hiroshima, it’s estimated that 70,000 people were killed immediately upon impact; in Nagasaki, 40,000. But many more were to suffer and die from radiation poisoning and by the end of 1945, over 210,000 lives had been lost to the horrors of nuclear weapons.
Sadly as we commemorate the human cost of nuclear warfare, today the world is no closer to peace. The saber-rattling of the two corporate parties brings us to the edge of a nuclear catastrophe that would threaten all life on our planet.
Said Madelyn Hoffman, co-chair of the Green Party US Peace Action Committee, “Having visited both Hiroshima and Nagasaki 10 years ago, on the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombings, I am appalled that the world seems not to have learned anything about the need to avoid nuclear war at all costs. The Hibakusha, survivors of the atomic bombings of 1945, spent much of their lives warning that humanity and nuclear weapons are on a collision course and urging all the world’s governments to eliminate their nuclear weapons. Yet, just about a month ago, the U.S. and Israel threatened Iran in such a way that Iran now says they will seek nuclear weapons [DS – Is this true, though it is of course understandable?], after spending about 15 years trying to convince the world that they had no such aspirations. We need to tone down the rhetoric and stop the military action, to bring about a world at peace”.
As the genocide in Gaza continues with mass forced starvation looming over the entire population, Representative Randy Fine [a Republican representing Florida: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randy_Fine ] recently evoked the hell on earth unleashed in Hiroshima and Nagasaki with a chilling call for Gaza’s nuclear annihilation. He was seen on Fox News saying: “We nuked the Japanese twice in order to get unconditional surrender. That’s what needs to be done (in Gaza).”
Meanwhile, Donald Trump, who had promised to end the Ukrainian proxy war with Russia on his first day of office, just made a dangerous escalation in sending two more nuclear submarines up against the Russian border.
As bad as the AIPAC-funded Republicans are, we can’t forget that the Democrats are in their pocket too. The genocide in Gaza was enabled and funded by Joe Biden while Kamala Harris made clear that there would be no daylight between her and Biden as she promised to preside over “the most lethal fighting force in the world” had she been elected.
Green Party Presidential candidate, Dr. Jill Stein refused to allow the genocide in Gaza to be swept under the rug. She ran on the promise to end the carnage on day one of her Presidency and gave people a choice to vote for a true candidate of peace. In her fierce advocacy for the people of Gaza, she earned the endorsement of Abandon Harris.
The Green Party has always stood against the Military Industrial Complex and the weapons of mass destruction that threaten the planet.
The Green Party of the United State’s platform has a comprehensive peace policy with the goal of abolishing nuclear weapons by taking the following steps:
- Declare a no-first-strike policy.
- Declare a no-pre-emptive strike policy.
- Declare that the U.S. will never threaten or use a nuclear weapon, regardless of size, on a non-nuclear nation.
- Sign the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). Our pledge to end testing will open the way for non-nuclear states to sign the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which has been held up by our refusal to sign the CTBT. Honor the conditions set in the NPT for nuclear nations.
- Reverse our withdrawal from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty and honor its stipulations.
- End the research, testing and stockpiling of all nuclear weapons of any size.
- Dismantle all nuclear warheads from their missiles.
Today, as we reflect upon the terror experienced by the victims of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki 80 years ago, we must honor their memories by doubling down on our commitment to give voters the option of peace with the Green Party. Because we don’t take corporate money, we rely on people like you to support us in giving voters all over the nation the opportunity to choose peace at the ballot box.
In Solidarity,
The Green Party of the United States
[From VFP August 13th:
JUSTIN LOZA, a post-9/11 veteran member and President of Monterey VFP Chapter 46, carried a message directly from the VFP convention to a Hiroshima Day commemoration event at home. Speaking on behalf of VFP:
"I shared the story of Leon Cloder, a Hiroshima survivor and peace activist whom I met personally at the convention. Leon was just six years old when the bomb was dropped. His memories are vivid, from the flash that lit up the sky, to the chaos that followed, to his father’s choice to turn their shattered home into a first aid station. Through it all, he said, 'my father kept a peaceful heart.'
"In the second half of my speech, I connected Leon’s story to what’s happening right now in Gaza, where civilians are again trapped with no safe refuge, and where children and families are bearing the weight of war.
"I ended with a call to action: for veterans to use our voices to expose the true costs of war and support the complete elimination of nuclear weapons."
JACK GILROY reported on the Hiroshima/Nagasaki Remembrance organized by VFP Stu Naismith Chapter 92 in Broome County, New York, on August 6, 2025, which also featured speakers who had presented at our recent convention.
Rachel Clark, Japanese by birth and American by choice, joined with Japanese resident of Hiroshima, Ken'ichi Narikawa, for a solemn and informative morning at First Congregational Church in Binghamton. Rachel riveted the audience with her comments, and translated Ken'ichi's story of his conversion to nonviolence after 27 years in the Japanese Navy.
Ken'ichi and others rang the large bell in memory of the tens of thousands incinerated on August 6, 1945, over 200,000 of whom would die of severe burns, radiation, and leukemia. Three days later, we did it again in Nagasaki — another civilian town — using a trigger of plutonium rather than the uranium explosion of the bomb in Hiroshima. It was a most violent start of the nuclear age.
Ed Nizalowski, a member of Peace Action/VFP used his soprano sax to give solemnity to the setting.

ON JULY 23, WBNG Channel 12 in Johnson City, New York, broke the news of local residents including VFP members protesting the Israeli flag being flown over the Broome County Correctional Center, and threatening a lawsuit over the flagrant disregard of New York State Public Building Law. Public exposure of this crime finally forced the sheriff to take down the flag, a victory that resulted in a great story picked up by Pressenza, Counter Currents, Dissident Voice, and Anti-war.com. Thanks to Jack Gilroy for his leadership in and reporting on this matter.
