At UNC I noticed flyers for two events Friday afternoon - a talk by Bruce Cummings on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (north Korea) and demonstrations against the bailout in Raleigh, with a carpool from UNC).
Bruce Cummings is a leading American scholar on Korea, and I think he wrote North Korea: Another Country, an interesting introductory book on the DPRK and US Korean policy, which the Main Library has, but the catalogue listing seems incorrect. The talk is at the FedEx Center at UNC at noon.
I don't know what Cummings will say, but this is very timely, since the DPRK might launch a communications satellite Saturday or later next week, and since launching a satellite and testing an ICBM aren't very different, and the imperialists want to strangle the DPRK generally, this launch is controversial. I'm sure this is a political act on both sides, but at the same time it is a case of the American and Japanese imperialists, their allies in the Republic of Korea, and others demanding that the DPRK be deprived of its right to peaceful space development, just like they want to deprive Iran of its right to develop nuclear energy. Whether it is Bush or Obama in the White House, the nuclear-armed imperialists don't want countries that resist their domination to have even peaceful knowledge of nuclear and space technology
For more information on the Bail Out Students, Not Banks demonstrations, see raleighfist.wordpress.com or call 919-604-8167. The events will start at 4 at the Bank of America at 42 Fayetteville Street, followed by a march to the Wachovia at 150 Fayetteville St., then to the General Assembly.

Earlier Tuesday evening I heard that the Moncure Plywood strike ended with success. Management reduced its demands enough for the workers to return to work, so there will be a 50 hour workweek, less of an increase in healthcare premiums, etc. About 25 workers will return to work, and the other strikers will be called back soon, apparently.
