VFP on the new McCarythism, calls for resistance to illegal wars and war crimes

Originally posted October 13th at:  www.veteransforpeace.org/pressroom/news/2024/10/13/end-washingtons-new-mccarthyism ; slightly edited --

End Washington's New McCarthyism!

In April, the U.S. House passed H.R. 6408: “An Act To amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to terminate the tax-exempt status of terrorist supporting organizations.” It was introduced in the Senate as S. 1436.

It sounds benign, but it reaches well beyond any narrowly defined or momentarily intended targets. If enacted into law, it can be used against any non-profit which engages in any issue not favored by whatever Administration is in power in the future.

The Act details procedures for the Secretary of the Treasury to designate organizations as having provided material support to groups deemed to be terrorist organizations. Section (C) (ii) provides “Opportunity to Cure” procedures.  In addition to this being “guilty until proven innocent,” Section (F) states “ the United States district courts shall have exclusive jurisdiction to review a final determination with respect to an organization’s designation as a terrorist supporting organization.”  Thus, if the Administration wants to silence some voices it can simply do so unless the courts intervene.

This bill legislates broad Executive authority to suspend normal due process, allowing the Secretary of the Treasury to strip US groups of their non-profit status in a peremptory manner with virtually no limitations, accountability, or meaningful recourse.

Immediate support for the bill is related to the present crisis in Gaza, but it can be used in any manner in the future.  It also has a three year “look-back” feature, which means the government can designate an organization or country as "terrorist," and then look back at any non-profit which has donated or supported that organization or country in the last three years.

The definition of "support" is also vague. If a non-profit calls for a mutual ceasefire and negotiations in Gaza (or any other future conflict), is that support for only one side?  Some in Washington and elsewhere currently frame it that way.

Here is a sign-on letter opposing the bill, from numerous organizations: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScICili7mzBYpeE2cZk4AWcSlo5QNj7CeSzH_Ti66uhjqbpRg/viewform

And there’s a larger context here, provided by a recent Veterans For Peace statement:

California Democratic Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi's recent claims that Code Pink and other peace protesters calling for a ceasefire in Gaza are either Russian or Chinese funded is absurd and insulting, and Veterans For Peace calls on her to withdraw such allegations and apologize.

In October of 2023, Pelosi told a group of Code Pink protesters (all of whom were White American women), to "Go back to China where your headquarters is."  Then in January of 2024, Pelosi said in an interview, “I think…some of these protesters are spontaneous and organic and sincere… Some, I think, are connected to Russia. And I say that having looked at this for a long time now, as you know.”

When asked whether she thought some pro-Palestinian protests were Russian plants, the responded, “I don’t think they’re plants…I think some financing should be investigated…and I want to ask the FBI to investigate that.”

Now that the US has declared Russia and China to be our latest enemies, Pelosi is trying to connect dots that simply aren't there.

On August 5, 2023, the New York Times attacked Jodie Evans, Code Pink and other peace groups in an article entitled, “A Global Web of Chinese Propaganda Leads to a U.S. Tech Mogul.”  But if one reads the article carefully, the evidence shows the headline was false. The American tech mogul in question made all his money in America and is donating his American money to American and international peace organizations.

Following the NYT article, Republican US senator Marco Rubio asked the United States Department of Justice to open an investigation into Code Pink and other entities for potential violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA). Then in November of 2023, ten Republican House members of Congress signed a letter saying that they are 'deeply concerned' with Code Pink's ties to the Communist Party of China and requesting documentation.

The federal government has expanded its use of FARA (Foreign Agents Registration Act) to target Black liberation activists and Chinese Americans working for peace with China.  Examples include the African People’s Socialist Party and the Uhuru Movement, where three individuals were charged with acting as foreign agents of Russia based only on normal international exchange and collaboration between peace and justice advocates from different nations, something Veterans For Peace and other organizations often do, as do businesses and trade organizations. It is normal human communication and networking.

In another example, Boston-area trade unionist Li Tang “Henry” Liang, a Chinese American activist and union member and advocate for peace between the US and China, has also been arrested and indicted under FARA.

The US has used FARA to repress peace and justice organizers going all the way back to the 1951 prosecution of W.E.B. DuBois and the prosecution of the Cuban Five. From 2018 to 2022, the FBI arrested and prosecuted Chinese American scientists under the “China Initiative.”  Most were found innocent, and the “China Initiative” was finally dropped due to apparent racial profiling.  But Chinese American scientists can still be arrested under other criteria, and there is currently an effort under way in Congress to reinstall the “China Initiative.”

On September 3, 2024, the Washington Post published an article claiming that the crowds of Chinese Americans who turned out to welcome China’s president Xi Jinping at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit were “non-state actors to further China’s political goals overseas,” who had violently attacked Tibetan and Hong Kong anti-China protesters to silence them.  But the Post relied almost exclusively on the Tibetan and Hong Kong protesters’ reports and videos. There is no evidence that the welcomers attended the event intending to create disturbance, and in fact a majority of them were older retired persons with no history of violence or law breaking of any kind. There is more reason to believe the anti-China demonstrators were the ones intending to create negative publicity for propaganda purposes. The Hong Kong protesters included leaders from the Hong Kong Democracy Council, a group with a history of violence during the 2019 Hong Kong riots who were funded by the National Endowment for Democracy, a CIA offshoot.

One should also note the establishment looking the other way when violent right wing counter-protesters using weapons physically attack peaceful university  protesters against the Gaza genocide. The police have let the attacks happen, then arrested the peaceful protesters.

Other recent events have highlighted the increasing suppression of activists and independent voices by imperial authorities, underscoring a troubling trend towards authoritarianism.

In the US, the FBI raid on former Marine intelligence officer Scott Ritter’s home and the intense questioning of Jacob Berger, following his humanitarian mission to Egypt, reveal a similar clampdown on critical voices. Ritter’s home was invaded in a bid to silence his outspoken criticism of US foreign policy, while Berger’s scrutiny highlights the dangerous repercussions for those engaged in humanitarian work abroad.

Regardless of whether we agree or disagree with these voices, it is imperative to protect their free speech rights if we want to live in an open society where diverse perspectives can be freely expressed and debated.

These incidents collectively demonstrate an alarming trend of targeting and silencing individuals who challenge power and advocate for the vulnerable and dispossessed. The suppression of these voices not only undermines democratic principles but also threatens the very foundation of free expression and critical engagement. It is crucial to stand in solidarity with those being targeted, defend the freedoms of speech and action, and resist this encroaching wave of authoritarianism we are facing.

Remember Lutheran pastor Martin Niemöller’s famous quote about Nazi Germany which began, “First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out…?”

Today, they come for Black Socialists, then Chinese Americans, then White CODEPINK women, then retired military officers, then peace activists in allied nations, and then for the peace non-profits.

Either we all stand together, or we will all fall separately.

END WASHINGTON’S NEW MCCARTHY PERIOD!

Calls for GI’s to Resist Illegal Wars and War Crimes

Veterans For Peace applauds the Israeli military reservists who are calling for a ceasefire and the release of hostages, and who say they will not participate in genocide. You are doing the right thing. Your courageous stance may be answered by official threats and even imprisonment. But you will never regret refusing to kill innocent Palestinian men, women and children.

Palestinian Lives Matter. Yet Palestinians are being systematically slaughtered before the eyes of the world. The ongoing US-backed Israeli genocide in Gaza is unacceptable.  It is a stain on human history.  And it must be ended.

Veterans For Peace has consistently called for an end to the genocide in Gaza, for a permanent ceasefire, and most importantly, for an end to US arms shipments to Israel. When U.S. bombs stop falling on Palestinian children, the genocide will have ended.  Veterans For Peace has meticulously documented the US laws that the Biden Administration is breaking when it sends weapons to Israel while it is bombing and starving innocent civilians. As the slaughter in Gaza has continued and escalated, we have sent Open Letters to the State Department, to President Biden, to Vice President Harris and to the Justice Department.

One thing is very clear – this is genocide, a deliberate sustained campaign to wipe out an entire nation of people. This genocide is now being intensified. And it is illegal a thousand times over.

As veterans who have participated in too many illegal and immoral wars, we also want to address our young sisters and brothers, daughters and sons in the U.S. military.  The U.S. has 40,000 troops deployed on ships and at bases throughout the Middle East. President Biden recently sent 100 U.S. troop to be stationed in Israel just as Israel is preparing to attack Iran and is bracing for Iran’s promised response.

The U.S. is also backing Israel’s invasion of Lebanon.  The U.S. military itself has recently dropped bombs in Yemen, Syria and Iraq. Now there is active discussion about waging war on Iran!

Are U.S. troops being purposely deployed where they will be targets and casualties?  Is this the way that the Biden Administration will back us into a war with Iran? Such a war is not in the interests of the people of Iran, nor of Israel, nor of the United States.  This is a bold war of colonialism and empire – fought for control of other people’s land and resources.

Veterans For Peace has joined with several other organizations to promote the Appeal for Redress (v.2), an opportunity for active-duty GI’s to safely present their concerns to their Congressional
representatives.  We refer GI’s who are thinking about becoming Conscientious Objectors to the Center on Conscience and War. We can put you in touch with a GI Rights lawyer if needed.

Remember, it is right to resist unjust wars and illegal orders. And when you do, you will have the support of Veterans For Peace.

An email sent out by 2024 Green Party US presidential candidate Jill Stein ( www.jillstein2024.com/ ) on September 6th:

[  ],

She was 26 years old. She recently graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle.

She was like millions of our daughters and nieces and sisters – her whole life ahead of her. But now Aysenur Eygi is dead – murdered by Israel today in the West Bank.

[A photo of Aysenur Ezgi Eygi]

I am sickened. I am heartbroken. I am disgusted and outraged. And you should be, too.

Today the Israeli Occupation Forces brutally murdered Aysenur – an American citizen and a peace activist protesting settlements in the West Bank.

Israeli forces shot her in the head. Deliberately. Just as they did Shireen Abu Akleh two years ago.

Mainstream media is already working overtime to whitewash this crime.

They’ve described Aysenur as a “Turkish-American” or “American-Turkish” in an obvious attempt to downplay her identity as a full American citizen (not that her citizenship should matter ... but to our policymakers and the public, it does).

They’ve called it “a shooting” stating that “an activist was killed” without describing how she died – or by whose hand.

This is important. Do not look away. This is what witnesses had to say:

Just after graduation this year, Aysenur joined a group of activists with the International Solidarity Movement, going directly to the heart of danger to hold the line as a peace activist against illegal Israeli “settlements” in the West Bank.

That’s where she was today when, unprovoked, IDF soldiers murdered her in cold blood with a killshot directly to the head.

Biden administration officials like Anthony Blinken can wring their hands and cluck their tongues and “condemn” the horrific violence playing out every single day against Palestinians and peace activists in every part of Palestine (NOT just Gaza).

But those protestations ring hollow when the same people shaking their heads with regret and dismay are rubber-stamping the latest billion-dollar-arms shipment to the murderers pointing the gun.

Aysenur Eygi was a brilliant young woman who dedicated her life to the service of others. As a fresh graduate she could have been chasing the career of her dreams. But she chose to hold the line for Palestine.

In February of this year, following the death of three American soldiers in Jordan at the suspected hands of Iranian-backed proxy rebels, Joe Biden forcefully declared: “If you harm an American, we will respond."

Well Joe. They murdered an American today. Will you finally stop arming the murderers?

The truth is Biden won’t seek justice for Aysenur because he knows that ultimately, he is responsible. By arming this fascist, murderous, apartheid regime and giving them unrestricted political cover, he may as well have loaded the gun.

Aysenur will not rest until we end our support for this violent regime.

As your president, I will terminate all arms transfers and military aid to Israel on DAY ONE of my administration. I will impose an arms embargo until the Israeli government joins the peace process as a legitimate partner and an honest broker. And I will support international arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his cabinet of thugs.

Biden called Israel’s planned assault on Rafah a “red line.” Israel ignored the United States, ignored the international community, and invaded Rafah with a devastating military assault. And nothing happened.

Now they’ve murdered an American citizen – and still nothing is happening.

It ends with us.

In solidarity,

Jill

ADC Statement on Execution of U.S. Citizen by Israeli Occupation Forces

This statement was sent out September 6th and was originally posted at:  blackallianceforpeace.com/bapstatements/uhuru24

Black Alliance for Peace Condemns the Federal Indictments of the Uhuru 3 and Denial of their Fundamental Human Rights to Speech, Association, Information and Political Dissent

Tampa, Florida — The process of jury selection on September 3rd, 2024, will mark the beginning of the federal trial of Omali Yeshitela, Chairman of the African People’s Socialist Party (APSP); Penny Hess, Chair of the African People’s Solidarity Committee (APSC); and Jesse Nevel, Chair of the Uhuru Solidarity Movement (USM), together known as the Uhuru 3.

The Uhuru 3 were indicted by the U.S. government in April 2023 on the absurd charges of being “agents of a foreign government.” — charges very similar to the indictment of W.E.B. Dubois, the internationally known Black scholar and human rights defender. Dubois was eighty-one at the time of his indictment as a supposed agent of the Soviet Union for his anti-nuclear and pro-peace advocacy. Omali Yeshitela is similarly eighty-one with an international standing as a human rights and anti-imperialist fighter for more than 60 years. The African Peoples’s Socialist Party and Uhuru Movement that he helped to found have been organizing and advocating for African people and colonized peoples for over 50 years.

Ajamu Baraka, Chair of the Black Alliance for Peace’s (BAP) Coordinating Committee who will be an official observer of the trial states that:

“It is only in the imagination of white supremacists that African people would need smart white people from Russia to guide our people and movement to oppose the U.S./EU/NATO proxy war against Russia and analyze and comment on all aspects of U.S. foreign policy. Internationalism has always been a core principle of our movement from the Garvey Movement and anti-fascist struggles of Africans in America and in Spain in the form of the Abraham Lincoln Brigades, as well as the International Friends of Ethiopia that opposed the Italian invasion of Ethiopia, to our support for the liberation movements in Cuba, Haiti, Africa, Central America, and Vietnam.

Omali Yeshitela is an outstanding product and an example of that tradition, which, among many other reasons, is why BAP gives its inexorable support to chairman Yeshitela, as well as to Penny Hess and Jesse Nevel, who embody the highest example of revolutionary solidarity with African people. Hess and Nevel have stood with us, and we intend to stand with them against the criminal repression that the Uhuru 3 are targets of.”

BAP recognizes that the ridiculous charges leveled at the Uhuru 3 represent a shot across the bow of the radical Black movement. The U.S. understands that if it is successful in containing Black opposition to the increasingly aggressive militarism abroad and repression within the borders of the U.S., the broader movement in the U.S. will be more easily controlled.

BAP and our movement will not be intimated. We recognize that the complete abandonment of constitutional and human rights by the U.S. and other Western states represents an irreversible crisis of legitimacy. We will continue to stand in support of the right to resist as a core human right.

I'm re-posting this bloodthirsty, lawless US imperialist statement, very reminiscent of the Bush-Cheney era, for educational value.  Both Liz and Dick Cheney have now endorsed Kamala Harris.

Unrelated news regarding the war in the Middle East:  In his speech before Congress on the 24th, which a few members from North Carolina missed, Netanyahu specifically mentioned and praised UNC-Chapel Hill fraternity members over something done with the US flag versus pro-Palestinian/anti-Israel protesters (after everything Israel has done, I don't see anything wrong with hostility to and condemnation of the Israeli government and those backing it).  The fraternities received a huge amount of donations as a result and plan an event, I think in September.  The same trustees meeting that approved deep cuts at UNC-Greensboro this week also approved a large payment to the UNC system president, if I remember correctly.  I'm still looking into whether the Chapel Hill Public Library's actions against free speech were done for Biden and/or Netanyahu.  It has been noted that Democratic NC governor Roy Cooper, reportedly a likely vice presidential candidate, did not actively target anti-war protesters in the spring – but I think he also did not condemn or try to veto legislation officially equating criticism of Israel with anti-semitism in North Carolina.  On 1A on the 25th (?), Zwilick (spelling?) had to point out that there were a few "pro-Hamas" (and?) and "anti-semitic" sentiments expressed in the demonstration outside the US Capitol on the 24th, and that 'can't be unseen,' or something.  On the 25th Fresh Air's Terry Gross interviewed a staff writer from the New Yorker on the prospect of war between Israel and Hezbollah.  I missed most of it, but it was reminiscent of 2003.  Terry Gross, if not Dexter Filkins, seemed to be painting Hezbollah as an aggressive, Shia Islamist puppet completely under the control of Iran, which wants them to attack Israel, and Hezbollah itself wants to invade Israel – yet they haven't done so up to now, and it seems like the best time would have been when Israel was more bogged down in Gaza.  I didn't hear any mention of what Israel has done against Lebanon, such as seizing disputed territory, or any sympathy for Lebanese civilians killed or displaced by Israel.  I think I remember that UN peacekeepers were also killed on the border recently.  Many UN personnel, relief workers, journalists, and their family members have been  killed by Israel in Gaza, and Israel would probably treat Lebanon as it treats Gaza, without much respect for what community people belong to, Shia Muslim or otherwise.  When the media says Biden is going to prioritize peace in the Middle East during the remainder of his term, I think that means "peace" under Israeli, Egyptian, and Saudi boots, the peace of death, and Harris and other Democrats have been working with Biden to bring this about.  I can imagine Trump, Biden, or Harris attacking if not invading Lebanon, Yemen (the US and Co. are already meddling in and bombing Yemen), or even Iran for Israel, and the US already occupies part of Syria and has supposedly consensual bases in Iraq.  It would probably be very bloody for all sides if Israel and the the "West" start more wars in the Middle East.  It has been suggested by many that Hezbollah is well-armed and would decisively win a war with Israel, and that Russia and China would back Iran in a war with the US.

The US and UK are creating the groundwork to condemn the elections in Venezuela Sunday, July 28th and justify a coup attempt.  "Authoritarian" Maduro and the wrecked economy, without a word about US actions.  Venezuelan "socialism" is counterposed to "democracy."  The BBC [On the NPR/BBC program The World July 26th and I thought she was on the BBC news before that] gets a Latina with a strong accent [as in, having authentic Latin American roots] to say such things for the "Yankees" [the US elite and government] and NPR has a Nicaraguan immigrant [7/29:  I can't remember, maybe his parents immigrated], now based in Mexico City, to vilify targeted Latin American countries.  What they condemn Trump for they want to see happen to a far greater and bloodier extent in Venezuela and other countries, if the candidates preferred by the US government don't win, and here comes Trump for Juan Guaido and "Bay of Piglets" II, if not worse.  And here is NPR's Carrie Kahn to build up the legend of "pro-business" Machado, as they admitted, "not even on the ballot."  The sanctions, only under Trump, aren't the cause, they say.  Machado wears a large white cross, for what reason?  Their Republican "Christian nationalism" and "white nationalism" boogeymen are okay when voiced by the rightist "opposition" in countries like Bolivia.  They covered up alleged war crimes and lack of democracy for the Ukrainian government and Biden's European war effort, so what are they covering up about the "Venezuelan opposition?"

July 30th comment deadline on the Chapel Hill coal ash dump.  A delay on the remediation of Greensboro's Bingham Park.

The atomic bombing of Hiroshima by Truman was August 6, 1945, but there were also illegal anti-war demonstrations August 6, 1950 in Japan during the Korean War and demonstrations against prime minister Eisaku Sato August 6, 1971, according to a Japanese post on X.  Elsewhere on X there is a charge that an undercover Israeli agent burned a US flag at a protest in this country.

The USSR and Mongolia declared war on August 8th and invaded Japanese-occupied Manchuria very early on August 9th, as had long been requested by the other Allies.  A few weeks ago the BBC had Mongolians complaining about Mongolian participation in WWII commemorations in Moscow and fearmongering about China and Russia.

Nagasaki was atom-bombed on the 9th.

I'm trying to post a calendar before August.

On the 2024 presidential election on the ballot in North Carolina:  the Constitution Party, Democratic Party, Green Party, Libertarian Party, Republican Party, and RFK Jr's party.  Three people are sueing the State Board of Elections for denying ballot access to Cornel West's party.  In Georgia the Democratic Party filed a lawsuit to deny ballot access to the PSL's presidential ticket, and the Democrats and Republicans are working to keep various third parties off ballots across the country.  They split the work of sueing in Illinois.  Green Jill Stein and PSL's Claudia de la Cruz were standing with the occupied, brutalized Palestinians outside the US Capitol on the 24th?

Off the cuff:  A few days ago, maybe Monday or Tuesday, NPR's Steve Inskeep referred to something like "third, fourth, and fifth parties" – yet more of NPR's allegedly unbiased, objective, neutral, and fair "journalism."  I will note in another post how Laisson and Co. talked at the RNC and when Biden pulled out of the election.  I think a very pro-Harris Democratic Party activist woman in Pittsburgh was identified as merely a community activist type.  NPR worked to get Biden off the ballot after the debate, after keeping those challenging him down, and now they are all in for Kamala Harris.  They claim that there is basically no opposition to Harris within the Democratic Party, and their politicians and Democratic Party-controlled NGOs such as NOW say, unite behind pro-Israel warmonger Harris (or else, as in the fall of 2001?).  Roy Cooper's NC Democratic Party allowed no opposition to Biden, other than "uncommitted," and has now endorsed Harris 100%, or something (and Florida was even worse, not even allowing a primary vote).  So much free and positive PR for Harris on NPR, and negative coverage of every other candidate they care to mention.  Harris and Zelensky are made out to be popular, heroic, and even epic leaders.  Bernie Sanders and AOC backed Biden hard, for what benefit to "progressives?"  NPR and others keeping bringing up Ronald Reagan, of all people, to criticize the Republicans and praise the Democrats, though they leave out that Reagan took more action to control Israeli aggression, at least at times, than Democrat Biden.  Trump and the Republicans give Harris cover on the left by portraying her as a radical leftist or even a Marxist.  And Obama was supposed to be a good "community organizer" and "constitutional law" scholar or whatever and he used it to cover over or continue what Bush-Cheney did, and Biden has a lot of gifts to give to whoever wins the election, after all the talk about the end of "our democracy" and no ongoing wars.  I think someone knowledgeable once wrote that constitutional law doesn't really exist.   Some Democrats are pretending to care about Palestine until after the election, though talk of Biden's "frustration" with Israel has mostly ended.  Trump is even more pro-Israel than Biden, but Biden and the Democrats have already gone so far for Netanyahu, helping Israel destroy itself.  They might be destroying the USA as well, with multiple wars and new cold wars and internal problems, not that Trump and the Republicans would fix the situation.
