Bill of Rights Day Proclamation at City Council Monday

The City Bill of Rights Day Proclamation will be presented at the meeting tomorrow at 7pm in City Hall.  It will be accepted by the Director of El Centro Hispano, Pilar Rocha-Goldberg, but there will be a delegation from DBORDC and DISC.  This should happen at the beginning of the meeting, as usual, instead of being delayed until the end of the meeting like the County Proclamation was this year.

Can you tell me more about this? I Tried to look up something on it. Does it pertain to immigration?

In about 2003 the Durham Bill of Rights Defense Committee (part of a national organization) lobbied the City Council and County Commissioners to approve proclamations affirming the Bill of Rights and human rights to mark Bill of Rights Day. This year DBORDC and the Durham Immigrant Solidarity Committee lobbied for stronger language against local police involvement in immigration enforcement. Durham is part of the Federal 287g program, but I think it has generally been used only against undocumented immigrant prisoners, rather than as a way to arrest people for next to nothing and deport them, as Wake County does. We also want the police to accept IDs issued by foreign countries, because undocumented immigrants can no longer get driver's licenses as IDs. I will post copies of the Proclamations when I have copies. There might be copies on the City and County websites.
