Some December - January events and anniversaries

More events will be throughout December and items may be listed for general interest rather than with full endorsement.

NC Green Party close to being a recognized political party

Recent legislation reduced the number of signatures required for a party to appear on ballots in North Carolina and for people to be able to register as Greens from a nearly prohibitive 94,000 to about 11,700.  This is a more manageable number, but money is still required to run a signature gathering campaign.  You can donate to the NC Green Party at:  ncgreenparty.nationbuilder.com/matchingfunds1  The US Green Party donated $5000 to the effort and you can donate to the national Ballot Access Committee here.  The national party is also helping ballot access efforts in Vermont, Montana, and Nebraska, and the Greens in Utah just gained ballot access.  People can also collect signatures themselves, such as at the polls November 7th.  For petitions and tips, see:  ncgreenparty.nationbuilder.com/collect_signatures  Occasionally left parties have gained access to the ballot in NC, but for many years the only parties on the ballot have been the Democrats, Republicans, and sometimes the Libertarians, and to my knowledge no NC party left of the Greens is in a position to gain official recognition and appear on ballots anytime soon, though it will be easier now.

BAJ showing Sami Al-Arian documentary

The documentary USA vs al Arian will be shown at Balance and Accuracy in Journalism's December meeting on Wednesday, the 13th, at 7:30pm at the Community Church, UU (106 Purefoy Road, Chapel Hill).  Donations are welcome but this is a free showing.  This is from BAJ's announcement:

"While the machinery of division and scapegoating seeks to distance us from our neighbors at home and around the world, the broad community of independent media, including filmmakers, offers us back our humanity.

This Wednesday we will screen the documentary USA vs Al Arian.  The Univ. of South Florida professor Sami Al Arian was charged with terrorism.  Yet even a “not guilty” verdict on the $50 million dollar terrorism investigation didn’t stop further use of Al Arian’s legal
status and a related case against the Palestinian relief organization Holy Land Foundation as political show trials.

Israeli born peace and human rights activist Miko Peled’s book ""Injustice: The Story of the Holy Land Foundation Five” is to be released early in 2018.  We will apply contributions
received Wednesday to the expenses of hosting Peled as his book tour begins.

National Call-In Day to Stop US Support for Electoral Fraud and Repression in Honduras

The Honduras Solidarity Network is asking people to contact their Congressional delegation, the State Department, and the US embassy in Honduras Thursday, December 14th, demanding that US stop political and economic support for current Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernandez, end military aid to Honduras, and not recognize a president installed through fraud and repression.  The US, especially Secretary of State Clinton, aided a coup there in 2009, followed by continuing violence.  HSN says it was illegal for the incumbent to run for a second term in the presidential election November 26th (and the 2009 coup was said to be over fears that former president Manuel Zelaya wanted to run for another term), and there is reason to think the results were altered for Hernandez.  For contact information, see:  afgj.org/take-action-honduras-solidarity-network-issues-national-call-day-stop-u-s-support-electoral-fraud-repression-honduras
