Toufan (Party of Labour of Iran): The collapse of the Assad regime and the seizure of power by the counter-revolutionary Tahrir al-Sham

The main correspondents in Syria for the BBC, NPR, and PBspeak as if they are PR staff of the "rebels."  At the end of the week NPR was repeating Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham Syrian "government" briefings and hearsay about 'Assad loyalists' carrying out attacks, including false flag attacks.  NPR pointed out the tie between the Alawite religious minority and the former government.  They had about two reports, during the holiday season, when people here might not be listening so much, on fears of religious minorities and NPR might have mentioned that "rebels" used Sunni chauvinist language.  Its like NPR is preparing to justify violence against the Alawites as  group.  I'm not sure if NPR has even mentioned the "rebel" offensive against the US-backed Kurdish force, or proxy, though the BBC has.  For a while I've wondered if it is a situation where NPR had a Taiwan independence activist reporting from China and then Taiwan (now she is suddenly reporting from Tel Aviv), a western Ukrainian nationalist reporting from western Ukraine, etc.   For the 'peaceful' Christmas holiday Bryan Mann (spelling?) talked about going to a hidden command center and watching a drone blow up a singlRussian soldier advancing, on the ground, in the snow at night (?).  US personnel got PTSD assassinating people overseas by drone during the "War on Terror."  Other times drones have killed people trapped in buildings and pipes.  NPR makes sure to have staunchly anti-Venezuelan/anti-Socialist correspondents like John Otis reporting on that country (they brought him out during the holiday too, to talk about and in some cases condemn the many elections held worldwide in 2024), maybe even more than the BBC, which isn't a friend of the Maduro administration.  The BBC correspondent in Syria left or fled during the civil war, and now seems to be their main reporter there [Lina Sinjab?].  A PBS correspondent also seems to have great personal animus about Syria.  The BBC is going on about 'the pro-Russian party' in the Republic of Georgia again tonight – who is Rayhan Dmitri (spelling?)?

More typical was the report December 26th or 27th on NPR about how people couldn't go to the great Damascus market for year because they were "rebels," their supporters, or trapped in a "rebel"-held area.  One of the people visiting that day was a senior "rebel" leader, maybe from one of the groups brought in by Turkey.  Shopkeepers were so optimistic with the Islamists in charge, as was a teacher the BBC interviewed weeks ago; the roads are now going to be paved with gold and everything will be rosy.  The students and other people wilsuddenly, literally, be able to follow their dreams now that Assad igone Yet one NPR correspondent admitted to wanting to study Arabic in Syria, because it had a top university program, but her father refused.  In another report NPR staff interviewed a newly-appointed governor, close to the national Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham leadership, on how well disposed the "government" is towards Israel, as it bombs their country and advances further in from the old ceasefire line.  At least one protesting Syrian farmer has been shot, though I think he lived Israel does whatever, but it is fine, and Trump isn't even in office yet.  People claimed that Biden can be persuaded and isn't as bad as Trump.  The "governor" did not shake hands with the women in the NPR delegation.  NPR and the BBC are bending over to portray the "rebels" in a positive light, unlike how they harp about the similarly Islamist Taliban, never called "rebels" or the "opposition," though the BBC might be harder on Venezuela than they are on Afghanistan – Syria in 2024 might be an indication of how they would cover a seizure of power by the Venezuelan right, probably followed by more bloodshed.

On the other hand Simpliciu(on SubStack) noted "rebel" support (posters) for Iraqi Ba'athist Saddam Hussein.

Excerpt from “Toufan” No. 298 (The Monthly Central Organ of the Party of Labour of Iran-Toufan)
December 13, 2024
---------------------

The collapse of the Assad regime and the seizure of power by the counter-revolutionary Tahrir al-Sham

Early on Sunday morning, December 8, the fighters of Tahrir al-Sham and their allies entered the Syrian capital Damascus from various directions and took control of the entire city without any resistance. They took control of Damascus airport and the Syrian radio and television building without resistance and declared the overthrow of the government of Bashar al-Assad.

What is happening in Syria today is not a revolution. It is not an internal cry of society for freedom, social justice and the preservation of Syria's independence and territorial integrity. It is a counter-revolution. A counter-revolution composed of the “National Council and the Free Syrian Army”, of Tahrir al-Sham, the betrayer Kurds with the support of the USA and various groups and organizations that are a product of imperialism and reactionary regional powers. These forces have been supported and fed materially and ideologically by the US, Israel, the reactionary Arab countries and the pan-Turkish occupation regime of Turkey. The political goals of this opposition are in line with the demands of the Zionist regime of Israel and those working for the establishment of a new order in the Middle East:

First, to continue its global dominance and to encircle Russia, China and control Europe through control of energy sources and raw materials, US imperialism needs to strengthen its rear front and tighten the encirclement of its competitors. This strategic policy has led to US imperialism, hiding behind human rights, trampling on the rights of nations and disrespecting international law. To achieve its goals, it builds an opposition, finances it, arms it and organizes propaganda campaigns and "human rights campaigns" for it. It turns this opposition into an instrument for imperialist policy, as we are now seeing in Syria. A similar opposition also exists in Iran: groups such as Masoud Rajavi's Mojahedin-e-Khalq, pro Monarchists, separatist national chauvinist Kurds, Baloch, Arabs and pro imperialist “left” who aim to overthrow the Islamic Republic with the help of the USA assistance.

The aim of this deliberate "opposition formation", created through financial, political and propaganda pressure by a few self-proclaimed masterminds, is to provoke sabotage and separatism in countries that are important from the point of view of American strategy. The "Free Syrian Army" or Tahrir al-Sham are nothing more than copies of the "Iranian Liberation Army", whose president, the Mojahedin, have already chosen in advance, along with their so-called "Liberation Army". We see that the imperialist policy, the economic blockade and the continuous bombing of the infrastructure of Syria have ultimately led to a catastrophe. US imperialism, Zionist Israel and Turkey have deliberately overthrown the Assad regime and brought to power a murderous group whose goal is the mass killing of the future Syrian opposition, the destruction of the infrastructure that was built by the people of the country. It is said that Al Golani wants to establish a national government in Syria - something that, even if true, would not please the US, Israel and Turkey, whose goal is to dismember the country.

It is also said that he is seeking strategic relations with Iran, to guarantees Iran's security. However, even if this were true, it would certainly face resistance from the US, Israel and Turkey.

Assad believed that if he surrendered without resistance, Syria's army and state apparatus would remain untouched. But this did not happen. On the contrary: in no time at all, contrary to all international laws, the country's military zones were brutally attacked by Zionists, and Assad's palace and banks were looted. "These are still the results of the “early spell - wait until the dawn of your rule.  (Iranian proverb)"

Second, the aggressive Western colonial powers have subjected the Syrian people to the most inhumane economic sanctions and terrorist attacks for more than 14 years. The overthrow and collapse of the regime of the Syrian Arab Republic led by Bashar al-Assad is the product of such criminal policies implemented in the interests of Zionist Israel, America and their allies, such as the Turkish government. The strategic goal of Western imperialism is fully connected with NATO developments in Ukraine and is aimed at preserving Israel's interests in the Middle East. By weakening the Iranian front line, a possible military aggression against our country would be easier to realize.

The Western states, especially the United States, have acted in accordance with these interests and not to realize the freedom and democracy that the Syrian people deserve. The New York Times reported on June 21 that American intelligence officers in southern Turkey are organizing Syrian deserters and paid agents, while Saudi Arabia is funding the monthly salaries of the "Free Syrian Army." Other credible documents prove that the aggressive and racist Israeli government has also supported the "Syrian opposition" and the "Free Syrian Army" in various ways, including medical, logistical and intelligence assistance.

Turkey has played a deceitful and opportunistic role in this context. One of its goals is to break up the Kurdish regions in Iraq and gain control over them. As an aggressive occupier, Turkey has penetrated 30 kilometers deep into northern Syria. While it appears to support Palestine, in reality it has been preparing the conditions for Israel's interest step by step and organizing the conditions for the overthrow of the Syrian government and the breakup of the country. In return, it received billions of dollars from the West to deal with its own internal political crisis and annex part of Syria to Turkey. Because one of its goals is to split the Kurdish areas in Iraq and control them.

Today, all imperialist media, with their vast resources, have focused on preparing the Libya and Syria scenario for the overthrow and destruction of Iran. Forces that ignore all these realities and repeat the Americans' and Israelis' fairy tales about the "revolution" in Syria are either a group of ignorant and uninformed people or imperialist mercenaries in Iran. The imperialists' goal is to install a puppet regime in Syria that is loyal to the Pentagon and hostile to Palestine, Lebanon and Iran, and in line with Israeli strategic policy.

As mentioned above, the strategic policy of US imperialism is aimed at securing its unchallenged hegemony in the Middle East and Persian Gulf region and gaining complete control over the oil and gas resources and other natural resources that China needs. Such a policy of containing China and delaying the formation of the multipolar world is more important to the US financial monopolies than their daily bread. The “Syrian National Council” and its “Free Army” as well as Tahrir al-Sham are tools in the hands of the US and its lackeys to achieve this dark and diabolical goal in the region.

Third, the important question is: Why have the Syrian regime, Bashar al-Assad and his supporters not resisted, unlike in the past?

The scattered reports that have been published indicate that after the announcement of a ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel, an attack on Syria was put on the agenda and Israel had openly threatened to assassinate Bashar al-Assad. The terrorist and intimidating actions of the Israeli army in Syria, such as the assassination of General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, the commander of the Lebanon IRGC, the attack on the consular area of the Iranian embassy in Damascus on April 1, 2024 and the subsequent Iranian operation “Waddeh Sadeq 1- truthful promise -1” , as well as the assassination of General Abbas Nilforoushan, the appointed successor commander of IRGC force, on September 28, 2024 in a bombing raid on Beirut and the assassination of all the commanders of the “Rizwan” unit during a meeting of this unit, including Hassan Nasrallah, the Secretary General of Hezbollah, are among the brutal actions of the Israeli regime. Further, after the assassination of the Secretary General of the Lebanese Resistance Movement and the Commander of the IRGC in Lebanon, the Iranian forces carried out Operation Waddeh Sadeq-2 to avenge the assassination of these two commanders, as well as Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the Hamas political bureau, on October 1. Nevertheless, on October 3, Seyed Hashem Safi al-Din was assassinated along with several senior Hezbollah commanders. Reports indicate that an attempt was made to kill Iranian commanders that day as well.

These events made it clear to Assad that if a decision was made to assassinate him, it would be carried out and a major military attack would follow. Assad's calculations were that not only would he be killed, but that the regime would fall due to opposition pressure and foreign attacks, and that the war would be used as a pretext to further destroy the country. In addition, the crippling sanctions, the growing public discontent and the breaking down of the ties between the leadership and the people, as well as the decline in the presence of Iranian and Russian forces in Syria due to their own internal problems, led to an overall situation that made it impossible for the Syrian government to continue to resist.

At the end of the summer of 2018, the leaders of Russia and Turkey reached an agreement in Sochi, according to which Turkey promised to remove or disarm the terrorists stationed in the region without bloodshed. However, this never happened, and the terrorists were trained in this region by Turkey and the American and Israeli intelligence services and prepared for the final attack.

Fourth, the fall of the Syrian regime has exacerbated the internal contradictions within the Iranian regime. The leaders of the Islamic Republic of Iran showed no reaction to the fall of the Assad regime until the afternoon of December 8. On Sunday evening, the Iranian Foreign Ministry issued a statement calling the fall of the Assad regime "recent developments in Syria" and a "critical period in Syria's history." The statement said:

"In light of recent developments in Syria, Iran reiterates its principled stance of respect for Syria's unity, national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and stresses that determining the fate and decisions regarding Syria's future must be in the hands of the Syrian people alone, without harmful interference or foreign impositions."

The Iranian government stated in this statement that the Iranian leadership "continues to support international mechanisms, particularly UN Resolution 2254, to pursue a political process in Syria and will continue constructive cooperation with the United Nations in this area." It also stressed that the solution to Syria's future depends on "ending military conflicts as soon as possible, preventing terrorist actions and starting national dialogue involving all segments of Syrian society to form a comprehensive government that represents all Syrians."

The Iranian Foreign Ministry did not address Bashar al-Assad and his fate, nor the Islamist insurgents in this statement. Instead, it emphasized the relations between the two "nations," adding:

"The Islamic Republic of Iran will spare no effort to support security and stability in Syria, emphasizing Syria's position as an important and influential country in West Asia. To this end, it will continue its consultations with all relevant actors, especially in the region, and closely monitor developments in Syria and the region, taking appropriate approaches and positions, considering the behavior and actions of influential political and security actors.”

This statement by the Iranian Foreign Ministry is evidence of inaction, leniency and cowardice, as well as a message to the Trump administration, which will soon move into the White House. Some experts also point to the unpredictability of US policy under Trump's presidency. For example, it is suspected that Turkey supported the recent attack by the insurgents to strengthen its position before the start of the Trump presidency and to be able to conduct more advantageous negotiations with the United States and Russia.

There are two factions among Trump's supporters: one that pursues an aggressive policy in the Middle East and positions itself pro-Israel and anti-Iran, and another that advocates isolationism and seeks a withdrawal of the United States from the region. It remains unclear whether Trump is seeking a deeper US intervention to weaken Iran or a faster withdrawal that will leave regional actors to resolve their conflicts on their own, probably the first.

Fifth, finally, while the fall of the Syrian regime could be a turning point for the victory and rise of the Western-oriented faction of the Iranian bourgeoisie, known as reformists, who recently sent a message of friendship to the White House through their president Massoud Pezeshkian, saying: “Count us as human beings, gentlemen!”, this is only the beginning of the intensified internal contradictions within the system. More than 800 air strikes in the south of Damascus over the past 10 years by Israel, the assassination of Iranian officers and Russia's silence on the matter, the deadly economic sanctions against Syria, the terrorist operations of Islamist currents led by Turkey and the West, and the public opposition in Iran to the regime's presence in Syria... all this has sapped the strength of the regime of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Given its nature, it was not expected to do more to respond to the fall of its ally Syria.

However, the defenders of the Iranian regime blame Syria's military defeat on Bashar al-Assad and his unwillingness to resist the terrorists.

We have repeatedly stressed that the Syrian people's struggle for freedom and social justice without connection to the anti-imperialist struggle is meaningless and will lead nowhere. This also applies to our own country, Iran. Abandoning the anti-imperialist and anti-Zionist struggle without relying on the masses, securing political and social freedoms and ensuring the people's livelihood will ultimately lead to disaster.

Under Bashar al-Assad's rule, democratic elections, parties, political activities and parliament were not real. Although the form of government was republican, the people's opinion did not play a serious role in the government. Assad limited the entire government to the Baath Party, and both the government and the party were reduced to his person. After crushing the protests, fighting the terrorists organized by the imperialists and ending the civil war, Bashar al-Assad did not take any steps towards internal reconciliation but continued his false government rule. He forgot and put aside his promises of political reforms. The country's economy was destroyed by the sanctions and the theft of Syrian oil by the imperialist power of US imperialism, while the impact of neoliberal reforms of the past decades had further exacerbated social burdens.

The foreign winners of Assad's overthrow can be named as follows: Turkey and Erdogan personally, Israel, Qatar, the US, Trump and the Gulf states. Syria was the center of cooperation between Iran and Russia to challenge the unipolar world order. At the same time as the Western protests against military cooperation between China, Russia, Iran and North Korea grew, Trump also threatened the BRICS countries about replacing the dollar. With the loss of Syria, the West became seriously visible in its attempt to attack the center of this cooperation.

The developments in Syria are still in their early stages. Civil war and chaos will engulf the country. The role of the imperialist powers in the destruction and dismemberment of the country offers many lessons for the Iranian people to continue their struggle for economic change, social and political freedoms and resistance to any foreign interference.

VFP on Pete Hegseth and the war in the Middle East + new Chuck Fager biography (retired director of Fayetteville's Quaker House)

In related news, a new 569-page biography of Chuck Fager (Charles Eugene Fager, born in Birmingham, Kansas in 1942:  en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_Fager ), the recently retired director of the long-running anti-war or pacifist Quaker House in Fayetteville, NC (he was the director from 2002-2012, and Quaker House was founded in 1969:  Wikipedia and quakerhouse.org ), has been published (during the summer?).  Tell It Slant [Chuck Fager,  A ProphetiLife oAdventure and Writing on Religion, War, and Justice, Love and Laughter] was written by Haverford College history professor emerita Emma Lapsansky-Werner www.haverford.edu/users/elapsans ) [with Chuck Fager].  Quaker House's December newsletter quotes a reader, Pam, in the Chapel Hill Friends Meeting (at the corner of 54/South Road and Country Club Road, at the top of a very long slope, probably the big hill of Chapel Hill, nearly across from UNC?), as written – "Chuck, this book is fabulous.  I thought...ugh...it'so thick how am I going to get through it? but, alas! it is a page-turner! So totally interesting....I love it o much."  Quaker House will send a copy for a $100 dollar donation, but maybe it ialso available from commercial booksellers A 252-page book on Quaker House by Chris McCallum and edited by Chuck Fager, published for the organization's 40th anniversary, in 2009:  www.goodreads.com/book/show/22809460-yes-to-the-troops-no-to-the-wars is available from Quaker House's online store, along with other materials.  Quaker House is part of the GI Rights Hotline network (providing free, confidential, and accurate advising for active-duty military personnel, reservistsveterans, their families, potential enlistees, those who have gone AWOL, etc.:  girightshotline.org ; I think some prominent Catholic anti-war activists I knew in the western Trianglduring the "War on Terror" worked for the Hotline) and the center offers free counseling and does organizing around peace promotion, anti-torture, non-violence, conscientious objection, and moral injury.  For a few years the NC Coalition for Peace and Justice (NCPJ; the exact name?) organized a large rally and march with thousands to hundreds of participants every March in Fayetteville, a pleasant, warm, flowery, and sunny time of year in the Sandhills region of North Carolina, but of course it was in late March because the Iraq War began around the spring equinox in 2003.  'United We March,' back then.... but since the Obama-Biden years the anti-war movement has been reduced and it seems quite divided.  Libya, Syria, economic wars, coups, and the continuing legacy of the "War on Terror" and now Ukraine and much of the Middle East/West Asia, and the new cold wars and arms races go by.   I note that Quaker House organized a "Stand for Ukraine," in Cross Creek Park 3-5pm March 12, 2022, when the full-scale Russian intervention or invasion in the Ukrainian civil war was very new:  quakerhouse.org/event/stand-for-ukraine/  What about the role of the NATO countries, especially our country?  I remember that Chuck Fager once recommended my reportback from a large demonstration against the NC-based "torture taxi" Aero Contractors, accused of being a CIA front company, bringing some traffic here, even in 2024, I think, though he made sure to note that he did not share my red politics.  In with Uncle Joe...

Pete Hegseth Is a Terrible Choice for Defense Chief – Veterans For Peace

December 19th

The national organization Veterans For Peace, with chapters in over 100 U.S. cities, is calling on US Senators to vote NO on Pete Hegseth for U.S. Defense Secretary, should President-elect nominate him.

Veterans For Peace is astounded that someone with the track record of Pete Hegseth would seriously be considered for the critically important role of U.S. Secretary of Defense. His dubious and questionable qualifications are far overshadowed by the many reasons that should disqualify him. These include a well-documented record of misogyny, sexual assault, white supremacy, Islamophobia, financial malfeasance, alcoholism, and opposition to VA healthcare. Are these the qualities we want in our Secretary of Defense?

Misogyny

Hegseth’s long-running abusive behavior toward women – even decried by his own mother – should be more than enough to disqualify him. His stated intention to reverse progress for women and gays in the military was only reversed by him in recent days, after pressure from key women Senators whose votes he needs if he is to be confirmed as Defense Secretary. Can he be trusted to defend the rights of women and LGBTQ+ people in the military? Would he challenge the rampant sexual abuse within the military today?

White Supremacy / Islamophobia

Pete Hegseth sports tattoos on his body that are associated with White Supremacy. In January 2021, Hegseth was one of 12 national guardsmen flagged as potential insider threats and removed from a group providing security for the presidential inauguration of Joe Biden, after a fellow Guard member reported he had a tattoo on his biceps reading “Deus Vult,” a phrase associated with the Crusades and, in the 21st century, with white supremacists. Hegseth has said that his National Guard superiors removed him because of his Jerusalem Cross tattoo, a Christian symbol which they determined was connected to extremism.

Post Traumatic Stress / Alcoholism

Pete Hegseth’s bouts with binge drinking and public drunkenness at formal organizational events have been widely reported. On one such occasion, he was heard shouting “Kill All Muslims.” Was it the alcohol talking?  Islamophobia? Or both? As a national guardsman, Hegseth served at Guantanamo Bay and in Iraq and Afghanistan. Veterans For Peace recognizes that many veterans who experience Post Traumatic Stress, Traumatic Brain Injury, or Moral Injury have difficulty returning to civilian life, and have problems with alcohol and antisocial behavior. They need professional help, not the additional stress associated with US war-making.

A Voice of Restraint? Or Nuclear War?

Pete Hegseth should not be making critical defense decisions for the largest military in the world, particularly at this dangerous moment of superpower confrontation and nuclear brinksmanship. The very existence of human civilization is imperiled. Would Pete Hegseth be able to provide the president with wise counsel regarding ending the war in Ukraine? Could he stop sending U.S. weapons to fuel the horrific genocide in Gaza? Would he put a brake on the Neocon drive for wars against China and Iran? Could he be a responsible check on a president’s decision to use nuclear weapons? We fear that the answer to these questions is No.

Financial Mismanagement

Pete Hegseth has a track record of “failing upward.” He has been demoted and forced to resign from several veterans organization and PAC’s, after failing to raise funds, and spending as much as half of the organizations’ funds on Christmas parties for families and friends. Arguably, the stupendous and ever-growing Pentagon budget, which just failed its 7th audit in a row, and for which there is remarkably little accountability, might be the perfect piggy bank for Pete Hegseth.

Hegseth Threatens VA Healthcare

Of particular concern to many veterans is Hegseth’s opposition to VA healthcare. He supports “outsourcing” – or privatizing VA healthcare – a concerted goal of the Koch brothers-funded Concerned Veterans of America, which Hegseth headed up from 2013-16. For all its shortcomings, the Veterans Administration continues to provide excellent healthcare to millions of veterans, who rely on it and greatly appreciate it. Undermining, defunding and privatizing healthcare is an attack on all veterans, as well as an attack on the healthcare system, for which the VA provides one of the very best models. Senators who are interviewing Pete Hegseth should ask him why he would dismantle VA healthcare in favor of the failing private healthcare model.

Poll: Pete Hegseth should not be Secretary of Defense

Veterans For Peace’s opposition to confirming Pete Hegseth as U.S. Defense Secretary is shared by most Americans, only 20% of whom approve, according to a recent poll. Will our Senators get the message? We should make sure that they do.

Veterans For Peace is dedicated to restraining the U.S. government from intervening in the internal affairs of other nations, and calls on the US to end its complicity in the Gaza genocide by stopping the flow of U.S. weapons to Israel.

Veterans For Peace Applauds Israeli Soldiers Who Refuse to Fight in Gaza

October 22nd

Calls for GI’s to Resist Illegal Wars and War Crimes

Veterans For Peace applauds the Israeli military reservists who are calling for a ceasefire and the release of hostages, and who say they will not participate in genocide. You are doing the right thing. Your courageous stance may be answered by official threats and even imprisonment. But you will never regret refusing to kill innocent Palestinian men, women and children.

Palestinian Lives Matter. Yet Palestinians are being systematically slaughtered before the eyes of the world. The ongoing US-backed Israeli genocide in Gaza is unacceptable.  It is a stain on human history.  And it must be ended.

Veterans For Peace has consistently called for an end to the genocide in Gaza, for a permanent ceasefire, and most importantly, for an end to US arms shipments to Israel. When U.S. bombs stop falling on Palestinian children, the genocide will have ended.  Veterans For Peace has meticulously documented the US laws that the Biden Administration is breaking when it sends weapons to Israel while it is bombing and starving innocent civilians. As the slaughter in Gaza has continued and escalated, we have sent Open Letters to the State Department, to President Biden, to Vice President Harris and to the Justice Department

One thing is very clear – this is genocide, a deliberate sustained campaign to wipe out an entire nation of people. This genocide is now being intensified. And it is illegal a thousand times over.

As veterans who have participated in too many illegal and immoral wars, we also want to address our young sisters and brothers, daughters and sons in the U.S. military.  The U.S. has 40,000 troops deployed on ships and at bases throughout the Middle East. President Biden recently sent 100 U.S. troop to be stationed in Israel just as Israel is preparing to attack Iran and is bracing for Iran’s promised response.

The U.S. is also backing Israel’s invasion of Lebanon.  The U.S. military itself has recently dropped bombs in Yemen, Syria and Iraq. Now there is active discussion about waging war on Iran!

Are U.S. troops being purposely deployed where they will be targets and casualties?  Is this the way that the Biden Administration will back us into a war with Iran? Such a war is not in the interests of the people of Iran, nor of Israel, nor of the United States.  This is a bold war of colonialism and empire – fought for control of other people’s land and resources.

Veterans For Peace has joined with several other organizations to promote the Appeal for Redress (v.2), an opportunity for active-duty GI’s to safely present their concerns to their Congressional
representatives.  We refer GI’s who are thinking about becoming Conscientious Objectors to the Center on Conscience and War. We can put you in touch with a GI Rights lawyer if needed.

Remember, it is right to resist unjust wars and illegal orders. And when you do, you will have the support of Veterans For Peace.

STOP THE GENOCIDE IN GAZA   –   No More US Weapons to Israel
REFUSE TO FIGHT ILLEGAL WARS   –   No War with Lebanon or Iran

GPUS statements on ERA, the ROK coup attempt, the (rightist) European Greens, and two more statements from before November 5th

I thought that I had checked the Green Party of the US' newsroom few times leading up to and since the election, but I must have missed these.  There are few slight edits throughout.  The first press release was originally posted at:  www.gp.org/gp_national_womens_caucus_calls_on_biden_to_publish_the_era

Green Party National Women's Caucus Calls on Biden to Publish the ERA

The National Women’s Caucus of the Green Party of the United States calls on President Biden to confirm and publish the Equal Rights Amendment in the US Constitution.

The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) is the duly ratified 28th Constitutional Amendment that guarantees equal rights to all people regardless of sex.

Jennifer Sullivan, Spokesperson, National Women's Caucus, 352-410-4484

“It's always been baffling to me that the ERA has not been passed, since it was first introduced in 1923! The Senate passed it in 1972, but thanks to the opposition and hard work of conservative opponents like the Eagle Forum and former Congressional candidate Phyliss Schlafly, it's somehow been an issue that just can't come to fruition. However, the required states have ratified it and this issue needs to become a reality. This way, no person or group can ever waste our time by blocking this anymore,” said Jennifer Sullivan, Spokesperson for the Green Party National Women’s Caucus.

The constitutional requirements have already been met:

  • The US House approved the ERA in 1971 with a bipartisan vote of 354–24. The Senate approved it in 1972 by another bipartisan vote of 84-8.

  • Virginia became the 38th state to ratify the ERA in January 2020, which means that 3/4 of all the states have ratified it.

Extending protections under the ERA is the most important thing Biden and Congress can do right now.

\

Green Party of the United States endorses the ERA in its platform: "We support the equal application of the Constitution of the United States of America to all citizens, and therefore call for passage of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA)."

Green Party of the United States Stands with the People of South Korea to Defend Their Rights Against Repression

The Green Party of the United States expressed grave concern over the recent declaration of martial law in South Korea by President Yoon Suk Yeol. While we acknowledge the complexities of governing in a time of heightened tensions, we firmly believe that such an unprecedented and authoritarian action undermines democratic principles and the trust of the South Korean people.

Michael Stewart, Co-chair, Green Party International Committee, 202-804-2758

“The deployment of armed troops in Seoul and the restriction of political activities represent a direct threat to the fundamental freedoms cherished in democratic societies. We commend the swift response of South Korea's National Assembly in overturning the martial law decree, and we stand in solidarity with the citizens who took to the streets to defend their rights”, said Michael Stewart, co-chair of Green Party’s International Committee.

The Green Party of the United States emphasizes the importance of nonviolence and peaceful resolution of conflicts, both domestically and internationally. We condemn the use of force against civilians and political leaders and call for a peaceful and democratic resolution to the current political crisis in South Korea. Our platform upholds people's right to engage in political activities free from the threat of violence or intimidation.

The Green Party of the United States joins the three progressive forces in Korea (the Green Party Korea, the Justice Party, and the Labor Party) to urge President Yoon Suk Yeol to reflect on the impact of his actions and the loss of confidence they have created among the South Korean people and the international community. For the sake of South Korea’s democracy and stability, we call on President Yoon to step down from office. This step would open the door for the restoration of public trust and the renewal of South Korea’s commitment to democratic governance.

The horrors of 1980s Gwangju and 1948 Jeju are fresh in the minds of Koreans as 707 Special Forces entered the National Assembly in the pre-dawn hours of December 3, 2024, in order to arrest the leader of the Democratic Party, the Speaker of the National Assembly, leaders of the conservative People Power Party, and other lawmakers. Elders who lived through the horrors of the military dictatorship once again came out to block military tanks and armored vehicles from entering the National Assembly Proceeding Hall.

"From Cheonji of Baekdusan Mountain to Baeknokdam of Hallasan Mountain, the Korean Peninsula is in crisis. The future of the Peninsula has never been more uncertain. But history has shown that when citizens come together and reach for a brighter future, the course of history can be changed. Article 1 of the Constitution of the Republic of Korea says that South Korea is a Democratic Republic whose power lies in its citizens. The Korean people have shown us that they will not let their beautiful Republic be taken advantage of," said Austin Bashore, coordinator of the Asia Pacific Sub-Committee of the Green Party International Committee, currently living in South Korea.

The Green Party of the United States emphasizes the importance of accountability, peaceful resolution of political crises, and adherence to democratic values. We stand with the South Korean people and call on leaders worldwide to uphold the principles of justice, transparency, and democracy.

Green Party of the United States responds to European Greens: November 1, 2024

We invite European Greens to communicate directly with us to understand our positions and participation in elections, and to support our demand for a national popular vote by ranked-choice voting (RCV) for president, which would eliminate the alleged spoiler factor.

They seem to have swallowed the myth that Stein voters would have voted for the Democrat if Jill Stein had never entered the presidential race, and that Dr. Stein's withdrawal would release her supporters to vote for Harris.

The feedback we are receiving from voters is that Dr. Stein's supporters had no intention of voting for either of the major-party candidates in the first place. Dr. Stein and the Green Party are drawing support from Americans who are appalled by US military aid for Israel's ethnic cleansing and extermination of civilians in Gaza. Large numbers of voters refuse to vote for any candidate who favors more aid for genocide or hesitates to call for an immediate ceasefire, which describes both Harris and Donald Trump.

US Greens have been dismayed by European Green silence or complicity in response to Israel's apartheid policies, illegal occupation of Palestinian lands, and atrocities in Gaza (now spreading to the West Bank and Lebanon). This issue is conspicuously absent from their recent statement on the US elections.

Regarding Ukraine: US Greens don't share European Greens' apparent reluctance to question the role of NATO, which too often promotes global US dominance and military aggression. US Greens have been critical of NATO expansionism, which helped provoke the current proxy war in Ukraine. This isn't an endorsement of Putin's actions — military invasion of another country is always a crime and targeted killing of civilians is always an atrocity that deserves prosecution under international law. Dr. Stein and US Greens have repeatedly called for a ceasefire and negotiation to halt the bloodshed in the Russia-Ukraine war.

We also recognize that, while Trump is calling climate change a hoax, Harris and Democrats will do as little as possible to reduce fossil-fuel extraction and consumption in the US. Harris boasted during the Sept. 10 debate that the Biden-Harris administration has facilitated "'the largest increase in domestic oil production in history," which suggests she will continue to promote an increase as president. See "Green Party: Both Harris and Trump would be a disaster for the climate": https://www.gp.org/harris_trump_would_be_a_disaster_for_the_climate

US Greens and other Stein supporters are as concerned about Trump's anti-democratic, authoritarian policies as anyone else -- perhaps even more so than Democrats, who have consistently compromised with and capitulated to Republicans during recent decades on policy. Harris is already parroting Trump's demagogic fear-mongering positions on immigrants to the US. Democrats have also worked aggressively to suppress Green voters’ voting rights by attempting to remove the Green Party from the ballot in many states.

The Green Party of the US exists and Dr. Stein is running because our country needs a real opposition party and a permanent alternative to the two parties of war and Wall Street.

We invite European Greens to communicate directly with us to understand our positions and participation in elections, and to support our demand for a national popular vote by ranked-choice voting (RCV) for president, which would eliminate the alleged spoiler factor.

The Democratic Party has ignored and rejected this demand, which leads us to suspect that Democrats would rather lose to Republicans like Trump than tolerate the presence of more than two parties and real competition in U.S. elections.

European Greens have the privilege of living under fairer and more democratic proportional representation electoral systems. Their public critiques of US politics should focus on why the unfair US system needs to be reformed. This would be more constructive than questioning, without talking to US Greens, the strategies of Green organizers, activists, and candidates here on the ground who must operate under the current system.

Green Party: Both Harris and Trump would be a disaster for the climate

  • Global temperatures will be higher after four years whether Harris or Trump wins; Greens urge enactment of the Green New Deal and a Day One presidential climate-emergency declaration

WASHINGTON, DC — The Green Party said today that while Donald Trump remains a climate denier willing to sell the White House to the fossil-fuel industry, Kamala Harris’s climate agenda would also lock in climate collapse.

"Trump would burn the planet faster, but Democrats are still leading us to climate chaos. Too many climate activist organizations and groups like MoveOn continue to promote voting for Democrats despite their weak record and platforms, hoping they'll get better post-election. But Dem leaders constantly find excuses to appease oil companies and they fail to deliver even on their weak promises," said Rachel Braaten, Green candidate for Mayor of Crystal, Minnesota.

"The Green Party remains the only national party committed to the concerted radical action needed to prevent a global climate catastrophe and to provide a decent future for Americans and the rest of humanity," said Braaten.

The Green Party since 2010 has called for an Ecosocialist Green New Deal  in the US. The Green New Deal combines an immediate halt to new fossil fuels and transition to 100% renewable energy within a decade with a robust Economic Bill of Rights which includes a living wage job and income for all, single-payer Expanded and Improved Medicare for All, and affordable housing.

2024 Green presidential nominee Jill Stein introduced the Green New Deal on the national stage during her 2012 presidential campaign.

What a Harris presidency's climate policies will look like

  • Kamala Harris boasted during the September 10 debate that the Biden-Harris administration has facilitated "the largest increase in domestic oil production in history," which suggests she will continue to promote an increase as president.

  • A report from the United Nations Environment Programme, "Emissions Gap Report 2024: No more hot air… please!" warns that governments are falling far short of the emission cuts embraced in the Paris Climate accords. Global warming last year already exceeded the target level of 1.5 degrees Celsius, with extreme weather rampaging across the US and the planet. The UN predicts that global warming will soar to 3-degree C warming this century, far beyond safe limits.

A Harris White House will not meet the Paris goals or fulfill the previous commitment of the Biden-Harris administration to reduce US emissions by 50% by 2030, which is now only six years away. Global temperatures will be higher after four years whether Harris or Trump wins on November 5.

  • While Harris touts casting the deciding vote for the Inflation Reduction Act, the bill included much less funding for renewable energy than initially proposed and has so many handouts for false climate solutions that the Wall Street Journal reported that oil and gas companies are lobbying Trump to continue it. Greens noted that renewable energy will not slow the advance of climate chaos unless fossil-fuel consumption is drastically reduced.

  • Harris has reversed her opposition to fracking gas and dropped her prior support for the Democrats' far weaker version of a Green New Deal, with its 30-year timeline. While Greens would slash the military budget 50 to 75 percent to help pay for a Green New Deal, Harris is committed to funding increases to maintain the most lethal and climate-damaging force on the planet.

“We need a president who on Day One will declare a climate emergency and take needed executive action," said Randy Toler, co-chair of the Green Party of Florida. Toler's family in Tampa Bay was devastated by two hurricanes in 13 days.

"We need a president who understands that ending capitalism and its focus on growth and private profit is part of the climate solution — something expressed by both the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and Pope Francis. We need to make the polluters pay, including a robust carbon fee and dividend. We need to say no to fossil fuels and the corporate hucksters peddling false climate solutions like nuclear and carbon capture and sequestration," said Toler.

One of the many Green Party candidates running for local office on the climate issue is Eddie Espinoza, candidate for Texas Railroad Commissioner, the public official who regulates the state's oil and gas industry.

"The only climate solution is to transition away from fossil fuels to clean renewables like wind, solar, and utility-scale batteries. I call for no fracking, no new fossil fuel projects, and a phase out of current fossil fuel energy plants. The Railroad Commission should ban carbon capture schemes, because carbon capture is not a real climate solution," said Espinoza.

Green Party adopts DNC ploy, offers journalists questions for Harris

  • Greens: "We're on to you, DNC and talking heads."

WASHINGTON, DC — The Green Party of the United States is offering journalists a list of challenging questions to ask Democratic nominee Kamala Harris in interviews, mirroring a strategy used by the Democratic National Committee. The questions for Harris are listed below.

Tavis Smiley revealed during his October 24 interview with Green presidential nominee Jill Stein and running mate Butch Ware (https://www.youtube.com/live/re6vGZopGwg) that the DNC has been manipulating media coverage of the presidential race by sending journalists insinuating and hostile questions for Dr. Stein, including personal attacks.

"If a journalist reads questions supplied by a political party to a candidate during the course of an interview, the journalist has an obligation to reveal the source of the questions. Tavis Smiley did so, to his credit. Other journalists who've posed similar questions to Dr. Stein haven't, which makes them mouthpieces for the DNC," said Joseph Naham, co-chair of the Green Party of the US.

"We've decided to employ the DNC's strategy, except we're doing it publicly and transparently so journalists can maintain their integrity," said Naham.

Greens suspected that coordinated manipulation was happening in certain news media, because of the similarity in attempts to misrepresent, discredit, and smear Dr. Stein.

Questions for Kamala Harris

  1. You've repeatedly called for a ceasefire in Gaza. If you're truly disturbed by the Israeli Defense Forces' extermination of innocent civilians, why haven't you sought a cutoff of US weapons for Israel to force a ceasefire?

  2. Why haven't you called Israel an apartheid state, in agreement with the assessment of over 156 other world leaders and the International Court of Justice?

  3. As senator, you supported the Green New Deal, which was originally proposed by the Green Party, including a carbon tax and bans on fracking and offshore drilling. Why do you now endorse fracking and more drilling as the global climate crisis worsens? Why did you boast during the September 10 debate that the Biden-Harris administration has facilitated "the largest increase in domestic oil production in history"?

  4. How do you plan to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement and the previous commitment of the Biden-Harris administration to reduce US greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030, which is now only six years away?

  5. As senator you co-sponsored a bill setting a schedule to increase the percentage of zero-emission vehicles. As vice presidential candidate you said you would reinstate federal emission rules for vehicles that would lead to 100% of cars sold in 2035 having zero emissions. Why have these positions disappeared from your campaign?

  6. Democrats had over 50 years to codify Roe v. Wade. Instead, President Obama declared it "not the highest legislative priority" in 2009 and Hillary Clinton chose an anti-abortion running mate in 2016. Why did Dems wait until 2020 to decide that protecting women's reproductive rights is urgently important?

  7. Dr. Stein has rejected an endorsement from rightwing extremist David Duke. Will you reject the endorsement you received from former Vice President Dick Cheney, whose role as mastermind of the 2003 US invasion of Iraq and deceptions to win public support for it led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians and thousands of US troops?

  8. Many Democrats have expressed outrage over support by some Republicans for Dr. Stein's campaign. Is this outrage fair when the Harris-Walz campaign has accepted endorsements and generous contributions from Liz Cheney, her father, former Trump aide Cassidy Hutchinson, and other Republican leaders and PACs?

  9. As senator you called the border wall proposed by Trump "un-American" and said you wouldn't vote for it "under any circumstances." Why, as vice president, did you support a Senate bill to fund a wall? Why do you support tighter rules on asylum claims? Why have your positions on immigration moved closer to Trump’s?

  10. Given your experience working at McDonald's, why don't you support a livable $25/hour federal minimum wage for American workers including fast-food employees?

  11. You co-sponsored Medicare for All legislation as senator and promoted it as vice-presidential candidate. Why did you abandon your support for Medicare For All? What is your plan now to cover 27 million uninsured Americans and protect us from financial ruin because of a medical emergency?

  12. Why haven't Democrats in the US Senate used their power to block Republican presidents' extremist appointees to the Supreme Court, as Republicans have done to Democratic presidents' appointees? An example is Judge Amy Coney Barrett, whose confirmation Dem Senators including you could have prevented using the same procedural tactics that Sen. Mitch McConnell employed to obstruct an Obama nominee.

  13. If Trump wins on November 5, who will Democrats blame the most to deflect attention from their failures? Jill Stein? Muslim voters? Black and Latinx men? Vladimir Putin? Susan Sarandon?
