We strongly condemn the criminal aerial attack of the Zionist regime of Israel on Iran.

Finally, this morning, the Zionist and warmongering regime of Israel, after weeks of procrastination and psychological warfare, has launched an airstrike against military centers in Tehran, Khuzestan, and Ilam provinces with the approval and cooperation of the U.S. imperialists.

 Although there is no detailed information about the size of attack and the damage caused to Iran yet, but this terrorist attack, which could be the beginning of a major regional war, is illegal and in violation of Iran's national sovereignty.

The purpose of the Israeli attacks on Iran have been to weaken the just struggles of the resistance front against the Zionist genocide of the Palestinians and Lebanese.  We strongly condemn the Israeli aggressions.

The war that Israel has waged against Iran, in various forms for a long time, is an aggressive, illegal, unjust and bandit war that violates all international laws.  It has been carried out to defend imperialist interests and reactionary and colonial order.

Iran's military response to the Zionist regime of Israel is defined as a defensive, legitimate and just.  Iran, according to all recognized international laws, has the right to defend its national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

No to the military aggression of the Zionist regime of Israel against Iran!

VFP on the new McCarythism, calls for resistance to illegal wars and war crimes

End Washington's New McCarthyism!

In April, the U.S. House passed H.R. 6408: “An Act To amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to terminate the tax-exempt status of terrorist supporting organizations.” It was introduced in the Senate as S. 1436. 

 

It sounds benign, but it reaches well beyond any narrowly defined or momentarily intended targets. If enacted into law, it can be used against any non-profit which engages in any issue not favored by whatever Administration is in power in the future.

 

The Act details procedures for the Secretary of the Treasury to designate organizations as having provided material support to groups deemed to be terrorist organizations. Section (C) (ii) provides “Opportunity to Cure” procedures.  In addition to this being “guilty until proven innocent,” Section (F) states “ the United States district courts shall have exclusive jurisdiction to review a final determination with respect to an organization’s designation as a terrorist supporting organization.”  Thus, if the Administration wants to silence some voices it can simply do so unless the courts intervene.

 

This bill legislates broad Executive authority to suspend normal due process, allowing the Secretary of the Treasury to strip US groups of their non-profit status in a peremptory manner with virtually no limitations, accountability, or meaningful recourse. 

 

Immediate support for the bill is related to the present crisis in Gaza, but it can be used in any manner in the future.  It also has a three year “look-back” feature, which means the government can designate an organization or country as "terrorist," and then look back at any non-profit which has donated or supported that organization or country in the last three years. 

 

The definition of "support" is also vague. If a non-profit calls for a mutual ceasefire and negotiations in Gaza (or any other future conflict), is that support for only one side?  Some in Washington and elsewhere currently frame it that way.

And there’s a larger context here, provided by a recent Veterans For Peace statement: 

California Democratic Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi's recent claims that Code Pink and other peace protesters calling for a ceasefire in Gaza are either Russian or Chinese funded is absurd and insulting, and Veterans For Peace calls on her to withdraw such allegations and apologize. 

 

In October of 2023, Pelosi told a group of Code Pink protesters (all of whom were White American women), to "Go back to China where your headquarters is."  Then in January of 2024, Pelosi said in an interview, “I think…some of these protesters are spontaneous and organic and sincere… Some, I think, are connected to Russia. And I say that having looked at this for a long time now, as you know.” 

 

 

When asked whether she thought some pro-Palestinian protests were Russian plants, the responded, “I don’t think they’re plants…I think some financing should be investigated…and I want to ask the FBI to investigate that.”  

 

Now that the US has declared Russia and China to be our latest enemies, Pelosi is trying to connect dots that simply aren't there.

 

On August 5, 2023, the New York Times attacked Jodie Evans, Code Pink and other peace groups in an article entitled, “A Global Web of Chinese Propaganda Leads to a U.S. Tech Mogul.”  But if one reads the article carefully, the evidence shows the headline was false. The American tech mogul in question made all his money in America and is donating his American money to American and international peace organizations.

 

Following the NYT article, Republican US senator Marco Rubio asked the United States Department of Justice to open an investigation into Code Pink and other entities for potential violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA). Then in November of 2023, ten Republican House members of Congress signed a letter saying that they are 'deeply concerned' with Code Pink's ties to the Communist Party of China and requesting documentation.  

 

The federal government has expanded its use of FARA (Foreign Agents Registration Act) to target Black liberation activists and Chinese Americans working for peace with China.  Examples include the African People’s Socialist Party and the Uhuru Movement, where three individuals were charged with acting as foreign agents of Russia based only on normal international exchange and collaboration between peace and justice advocates from different nations, something Veterans For Peace and other organizations often do, as do businesses and trade organizations. It is normal human communication and networking. 

 

In another example, Boston-area trade unionist Li Tang “Henry” Liang, a Chinese American activist and union member and advocate for peace between the US and China, has also been arrested and indicted under FARA. 

 

The US has used FARA to repress peace and justice organizers going all the way back to the 1951 prosecution of W.E.B. DuBois and the prosecution of the Cuban Five. From 2018 to 2022, the FBI arrested and prosecuted Chinese American scientists under the “China Initiative.”  Most were found innocent, and the “China Initiative” was finally dropped due to apparent racial profiling.  But Chinese American scientists can still be arrested under other criteria, and there is currently an effort under way in Congress to reinstall the “China Initiative.”  

 

On September 3, 2024, the Washington Post published an article claiming that the crowds of Chinese Americans who turned out to welcome China’s president Xi Jinping at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit were “non-state actors to further China’s political goals overseas,” who had violently attacked Tibetan and Hong Kong anti-China protesters to silence them.  But the Post relied almost exclusively on the Tibetan and Hong Kong protesters’ reports and videos. There is no evidence that the welcomers attended the event intending to create disturbance, and in fact a majority of them were older retired persons with no history of violence or law breaking of any kind. There is more reason to believe the anti-China demonstrators were the ones intending to create negative publicity for propaganda purposes. The Hong Kong protesters included leaders from the Hong Kong Democracy Council, a group with a history of violence during the 2019 Hong Kong riots who were funded by the National Endowment for Democracy, a CIA offshoot.  

 

One should also note the establishment looking the other way when violent right wing counter-protesters using weapons physically attack peaceful university  protesters against the Gaza genocide. The police have let the attacks happen, then arrested the peaceful protesters.  

 

Other recent events have highlighted the increasing suppression of activists and independent voices by imperial authorities, underscoring a troubling trend towards authoritarianism.

 

In the US, the FBI raid on former Marine intelligence officer Scott Ritter’s home and the intense questioning of Jacob Berger, following his humanitarian mission to Egypt, reveal a similar clampdown on critical voices. Ritter’s home was invaded in a bid to silence his outspoken criticism of US foreign policy, while Berger’s scrutiny highlights the dangerous repercussions for those engaged in humanitarian work abroad.

 

Regardless of whether we agree or disagree with these voices, it is imperative to protect their free speech rights if we want to live in an open society where diverse perspectives can be freely expressed and debated.

 

These incidents collectively demonstrate an alarming trend of targeting and silencing individuals who challenge power and advocate for the vulnerable and dispossessed. The suppression of these voices not only undermines democratic principles but also threatens the very foundation of free expression and critical engagement. It is crucial to stand in solidarity with those being targeted, defend the freedoms of speech and action, and resist this encroaching wave of authoritarianism we are facing. 

 

Remember Lutheran pastor Martin Niemöller’s famous quote about Nazi Germany which began, “First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out…?”

 

Today, they come for Black Socialists, then Chinese Americans, then White CODEPINK women, then retired military officers, then peace activists in allied nations, and then for the peace non-profits. 

 

Either we all stand together, or we will all fall separately.

Calls for GI’s to Resist Illegal Wars and War Crimes

Veterans For Peace applauds the Israeli military reservists who are calling for a ceasefire and the release of hostages, and who say they will not participate in genocide. You are doing the right thing. Your courageous stance may be answered by official threats and even imprisonment. But you will never regret refusing to kill innocent Palestinian men, women and children.  

Palestinian Lives Matter. Yet Palestinians are being systematically slaughtered before the eyes of the world. The ongoing US-backed Israeli genocide in Gaza is unacceptable.  It is a stain on human history.  And it must be ended.

Veterans For Peace has consistently called for an end to the genocide in Gaza, for a permanent ceasefire, and most importantly, for an end to US arms shipments to Israel. When U.S. bombs stop falling on Palestinian children, the genocide will have ended.  Veterans For Peace has meticulously documented the US laws that the Biden Administration is breaking when it sends weapons to Israel while it is bombing and starving innocent civilians. As the slaughter in Gaza has continued and escalated, we have sent Open Letters to the State Department, to President Biden, to Vice President Harris and to the Justice Department. 

One thing is very clear – this is genocide, a deliberate sustained campaign to wipe out an entire nation of people. This genocide is now being intensified. And it is illegal a thousand times over. 

As veterans who have participated in too many illegal and immoral wars, we also want to address our young sisters and brothers, daughters and sons in the U.S. military.  The U.S. has 40,000 troops deployed on ships and at bases throughout the Middle East. President Biden recently sent 100 U.S. troop to be stationed in Israel just as Israel is preparing to attack Iran and is bracing for Iran’s promised response.

The U.S. is also backing Israel’s invasion of Lebanon.  The U.S. military itself has recently dropped bombs in Yemen, Syria and Iraq. Now there is active discussion about waging war on Iran! 

Are U.S. troops being purposely deployed where they will be targets and casualties?  Is this the way that the Biden Administration will back us into a war with Iran? Such a war is not in the interests of the people of Iran, nor of Israel, nor of the United States.  This is a bold war of colonialism and empire – fought for control of other people’s land and resources. 

Veterans For Peace has joined with several other organizations to promote the Appeal for Redress (v.2), an opportunity for active-duty GI’s to safely present their concerns to their Congressional
representatives.  We refer GI’s who are thinking about becoming Conscientious Objectors to the Center on Conscience and War. We can put you in touch with a GI Rights lawyer if needed.

MOLEGHAF: UPDATE ON ARMED ATTACKS
in Port-au-Prince

On October 20th, 2024, the National Movement for Liberty and Equality of Haitians for Fraternity (Mouvement National pour la Liberté et L’égalité des Haïtiens pour la Fraternité, MOLEGHAF), a member organization of the Black Alliance for Peace (BAP), issued a statement on the increasing violence perpetrated by the paramilitary group “Viv Ansanm” (or “Live Together”) in Solino, Fò Nasyonal, Nazon, Kriswa and other nearby popular neighborhoods in Port-au-Prince.

MOLEGHAF asserts that this escalation in paramilitary violence is rooted in the neocolonial Haitian state’s collaboration with the United States and other colonial powers, all working to maintain their criminal political agenda and keep Haiti under occupation:

“The sellout Haitian bourgeoisie, at the service of U.S. imperialism, controls our country. This is Full Spectrum Dominance. The ruling class seeks to break the back of all forms of Haitian resistance. By burning our neighborhoods down, they exterminate our very ability to resist. While the United Nations is allegedly sanctioning and embargoing weapons and bullets, the murderous group “LIVE TOGETHER” magically has access to hundreds of thousands of U.S. weapons.”

MOLEGHAF stresses that “US and Western imperialism” have targeted their neighborhoods since “at least our national uprising in 2021.” The attacks on their communities continue “even though hundreds of Kenyan troops now occupy us”. As the Haitian elite uses paramilitaries to crush popular Haitian resistance, MOLEGHAF describes the deteriorating situation:

“None of us are free to leave our homes. We don’t know which way to go. The bloodthirsty death squads kill the poor and unfortunate inside their shacks. They burn through homes and memories. We, the population of Solino, have resisted this barbarism for 1 year and 7 months. Stand with us, We need help! The neocolonial Haitian state lays the basis of these massacres. We cannot continue in this situation. Solidarity is our only hope.”

The Black Alliance for Peace calls on the masses, especially those within the heart of the empire, to stand in solidarity with MOLEGHAF. We reiterate that if there is no peace, justice, and popular sovereignty for the Haitian masses, there can be no Zone of Peace in the Americas. We support MOLEGHAF’s efforts to provide the correct, radical analysis of its current predicament: that the ruling classes in Haiti, under the supervision of Western imperialists, “are seeking to break the back of the popular social movements.” We say NO to US-sponsored violence and repression in Haiti and YES to self-determination and freedom!!

Organizations Globally Condemn the Fascism of the

U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM)

Launch Annual Month of Action to Shut Down AFRICOM

October 1, 2024, marks the start of the 4th International Month of Action Against AFRICOM (U.S. Africa Command), organized by the Black Alliance for Peace (BAP). Every year, hundreds of organizations around the world endorse and participate in this Month of Action, standing united against the presence of the United States’ ongoing military presence in African nations across the continent.

International Month of Action Against AFRICOM will kick off with an international webinar featuring voices from the African continent and diaspora expressing the need for the complete withdrawal of U.S. troops and a complete end to the combatant command. Following the webinar individuals and organizations will engage in a month of autonomous and semi-autonomous actions and events designed to elevate this issue in the public consciousness around the world and encourage the continuation of the resistance against U.S. imperialism.

AFRICOM is the brainchild of the Heritage Foundation. The plan was incubated twenty-one years ago, with an eye towards low-priced natural resources and control over African security affairs under the guise of the “Global War on Terror.” Launched by the George W. Bush administration and brought to full operation by the Barack Obama administration, AFRICOM is most known for the destruction of Libya resulting in tens of thousands dead, and millions displaced. The U.S. continues to refine and expand the tactics employed in Libya across the continent.

This year’s Month of Action Against AFRICOM comes at a pivotal geopolitical moment for Africa. The continent is experiencing widespread anti-neocolonialist movements including: (1) the successful expelling of AFRICOM from Niger, (2) admission and evidence that U.S. ally Ukraine has supported terrorism in Mali, and (3) popular mass mobilizations against governments propped up by the U.S. that are facing state repression, ie. Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda.

The Month of Action Against AFRICOM does not represent the full extent of BAP’s work against the neocolonial occupation of Africa. BAP continues to call for the dismantling of NATO, AFRICOM and all imperialist structures. Africa and the rest of the world cannot be free until all Peoples can exercise their sovereignty and the right to live free of domination.

BAP’s Demands include:

• The complete withdrawal of U.S. forces from Africa;

• The demilitarization of the African Continent;

• The closure of U.S. bases throughout the world; and

• The Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) oppose the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) and conduct hearings on AFRICOM’s impact on the African continent, with the full participation of members of U.S. and African civil society.

Trotsky’s Comintern Conspiracy – The Case Of Osip Pyatnitsky — Grover Furr — October 20, 2024 10:30 AM Pacific Time

Starting on December 1, 1934, when Leningrad Party leader Sergei Kirov was assassinated, leading to capture, trial and execution of a Party member, Leonid Nikolaev, a number of conspiracies shook the Soviet Union’s Communist Party.  As revealed in the three Moscow trials, although Trotsky’s followers hotly contest it to this day, the 1929 exiled former Party member and once the Commissar of War, Leon Trotsky, was at the center of these conspiracies; Furr and Bobrov’s research is based on newly released files from the archives after the fall of the USSR.  In his new book, Furr and Bobrov examine the conspiracy within the Comintern by studying the investigation file of Osip Aronovich Pyatnitsky, head (secretary) of the Executive Committee of the Communist International (ECCI) from 1923 to 1935. Pyatnitsky’s investigative file contains a great deal of evidence, allowing the reader to see for the first time the vast extent of this combination of interconnected conspiracies.

As you know, last week Stein/Ware made history by being the first Green campaign to inspire the DNC and their handpicked candidate, Kamala Harris to release an attack ad against Jill. You probably know that they’re whining about Jill allegedly getting help from Republicans. But for all their lies and fear-mongering, it’s Kamala who can’t stop bragging about her 200+ Republican endorsements, including one of the most diabolical warmongers of the 21st century, Dick Cheney.

On a recent appearance on The View, Kamala was asked what she would have done differently than Joe Biden. Her initial response was that she couldn’t think of a single thing she’d have changed; certainly the fates of hundreds of thousands of innocent men, women and children being slaughtered by U.S. bombs in Gaza for over a year didn’t cross her mind. In fact she makes clear that she played a hands-on role in “most of the decisions that had impact.” But later she stated that there’s one thing she does intend to do differently – she’ll appoint a Republican to her cabinet!

If her embrace of the right-wing Republican Party wasn’t obvious enough for voters to grasp, she doubled down on it on Friday when she posted on X of her intention to “create a bipartisan council of advisors to give feedback on policy and inform (her) administration.” Because, she claims: “Our democracy needs a healthy two-party system.”

Our democracy isn’t healthy, and neither is the two-party system. A healthy democracy would offer robust choices for the people. Instead the anti-Democratic Party has fought us tooth and nail at every turn – from lawfare to overturn ballot access successes, to withholding our matching funds during a critical moment in our ballot access efforts, to siccing their attack dogs on Jill and Butch, and now sinking millions into a slanderous ad to bully people out of exercising their democratic right to vote for who they want. According to Kamala Harris herself, the biggest difference between her and Joe Biden is that she’s promising to govern even further to the right than he has!

Michael, we have just weeks to go to let the voters know that there’s a choice that represents their needs and their values. Give what you can today to make sure we can get the word out everywhere that the people have the choice to vote their humanity with Stein/Ware:

They can lie about Jill and Butch aiding the Republicans, but there’s a reason they never talk about our policies compared to the dirty duopoly candidates. The Green platform for people, planet, and peace exposes just how similar the Democrats and Republicans really are. Jill and Butch will cut off all aid and weapons to Israel on day one until they end the genocide and the apartheid. They will fight for Medicare for All, a real Green New Deal, a $25 minimum wage, and housing as a human right. Stein/Ware are the only real opposition to both sides of the corporate duopoly that, if Kamala has her way, will ultimately morph into just one corrupt party to rule over us.

It feel relatively spring-like the morning of October 14th and it was relatively mild over the weekend, but I think it will become much cooler later on the 14th.  The amphibians seemed more active at night.  Some mid-level clouds passed over early in the morning, and maybe that was due to a front coming through.  Around 7am I heard a yellow-bellied sapsucker and I might have heard a white-throated sparrow.  Both species only overwinter in this area.  

[It was warmer and sunny that morning and there were two or three cloudless sulphur butterflies, often chasing, despite a light breeze, at a nearby bed of bright red cannas, and I saw one here and then a red-spotted purple.  Potter wasps seemed to be visiting a white aster and a yellowjacket was interested in my left hand.  I had not seen any yellowjackets since around spring.  There was a gray moth fly on the 14th.  There have been few mushrooms recently and the soil is drying out, as is usual in late summer and early fall here.  There might be more mole activity again.  The deer are around, occasionally coming unseen to browse the dayflowers.  A few days ago a croaking great blue heron flew over, which doesn't happen very often.  Canada geese at nearby bodies of water can be heard at night.  I recently found another barred owl feather.  I noticed that the very pale reddish and fragrant chrysanthemums were suddenly opening on the 14th.  When they are blooming they become mostly white, tinged with pink. and attract pollinators, even monarch butterflies occasionally, and tiny crab spiders wait in ambush.  I think spotted cucumber beetles browse the petals.  Manhattan Euonymus and a white viburnum have a few flowers, and there a few remaining tickseed flowers and a few morning glories might continue flowering if is warm.  The large blue and yellow asters, Madagascar periwinkles or vincas, and orange Nasturtiums continue to flower.  More is probably blooming in Chapel Hill, old regrowing fields, etc.  Hot pink-purple Gerardia might still be flowering, and is a larval food for buckeye butterflies.  Hickory horn devils are supposed to be around up in the canopy as late as November.  I'm not sure if the summer cicadas and katydids remain, and it is cold for them.  Halloween nights were usually cold and often clear in my memory, but in recent years it has often been mild to warm, maybe with precipitation.  I think the first serious frost here is usually around November 16th (12th?).  I saw lit Christmas decorations in early October.  There are supposed to be regional differences in when and how long people have Christmas decorations, but I think now is extremely early.  I'm just seeing decorations for Halloween, though I've probably missed many.  It is getting late for the dayflowers, but many were fully open, into the evening (though it didn't seem that cool) on the 15th, really glistening blue, but I don't think it was as dark a royal blue as in hot summer weather.  It might have been like a sky blue.  Really blue colors aren't common in nature here, other than a blue sky.  It was cloudy by the evening and the bright orange light was reflected over RTP.  There was some precipitation after dark.  A large nearby persimmon has few leaves except at the top.  Muscadine grape vines, crape myrtles, etc. are also becoming leafless.  A few weeks ago transformers were sparking and flashing and the power went out over a large area, though it was a sunny and more or less calm early afternoon.  A fire or sparks were flashing like the Sun through a thicket of saplings.]

A drone hit a cafeteria at a military base in northern (?) Israel on the 13th or 14th.  The death toll has risen to four on NPR, with many injured (BBC), but this article claims that far more were killed.  I think a former US intelligence agent interviewed on the BBC speculated that the drone could have come from Shia guerrillas in Iraq. -- mpr21.info/duro-golpe-de-hezbollah-a-la-cupula-del-ejercito-israeli/  They don't treat it as war when it is Israeli soldiers being hit, and Israel's military casualties are being kept quiet or covered up, but it is just regrettable or even good when Lebanese, Palestinians, Syrians, Iraqis, Yemenis, Iranians, and UN peacekeepers (from many countries) are harmed.  They come closer to admitting that it is a war with two sides in reporting from Ukraine.  I just heard Steve Inskeep say that Hezbollah "claimed" the attack, as if it weren't a legitimate military action during a war.  They don't treat Israel's attacks on civilians and peacekeepers, or Ukraine's alleged covert operations against civilians and civilian infrastructure, or US government "airstrikes" in countries we aren't at war with as terroristic or illegitimate.  They were leading into a story about Israel's potential (and 'legitimate,' definitely not widening the war) retaliation against Iran, for its allegedly ineffectual missile salvo, True Promise II.

On the 15th a WUNC's Colin Campbell claimed to Leonida Inge (?) that they are a "non-partisan" media outlet, while commenting on Republican gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson's focus on friendly media.  Both the local and national NPR organizations seem to be working for the Democratic Party, especially for Biden and now Harris, even if it usually isn't as blatantly partisan as typical talk radio.  Their tone, wording, framing, hiring, and choices about what to cover and how are biased for the Democrats, against both the Republican Party and the left apart from the Democratic Party.  The NPR whistleblower in about 2023 alleged something about NPR planning its coverage so as not to help Trump, and it is obvious.  What happens when the truth or public opinion aren't on Biden's side?  Registered independents and non-voters probably outnumber the registered Democrats in North Carolina if not nationally and independent/unaffiliated voters are a growing demographic, and many people rarely or never vote.  WUNC's Due South program just discussed the issue of NC's large percentage of registered independents several weeks ago.  It has been alleged that the USA's often low-turnout elections still represent the popular will.  When PBS in NC carried Japan's NHK  several year ago, their daily news program covered a large number of Japanese parties and candidates for prime minister, while NPR couldn't be bothered to even profile all of the major candidates in the official debates during the 2020 Democratic Party presidential primary.  Japan has a different system, and only a few major parties, but it still seems like the US mainstream media is rarely unbiased, even when covering well-known Democratic Party candidates, misinforming the public.  I thought that the commercial mainstream media was generally even more warmongering than public media, but maybe that has changed.  I was surprised when a TV news station in Raleigh played video of local "pro-Palestinian protests" and daily life in Gaza several months ago.]

[There was a Due South rerun October 17th with the author of Anatomy of a Purple State, and they said something like "unaffiliated" became the largest "party" in North Carolina in 2021 and is growing very fast, and I think they said that the number of registered Democrats is in decline.  But the media focuses on the legacy duopoly parties and generally ignores third parties, independents, and principled non-voters, though I think NPR's Morning Edition did talk to one such voter, very briefly, in Michigan about two weeks ago.  The mainstream media mainly focuses on third parties to blame them for a Democratic Party loss, though there are a huge number of non-voters, and many "Democrats" have voted for Republicans for president.  Many academic and older leftists demand that we vote for Harris, after what the warmongering Biden-Harris administration has done, and Harris is promising more of the same, though she also says different things to different audiences.  The academic and Vietnam War-era leftists don't offer a plan beyond trying to put the Democratic Party in the White House every four years, regardless of what the Democrats do in office or propose.  What is the point of supposedly radical groups that serve as fronts for rightist Democrats and advocate only an evolutionary approach to change?  And the Democrats build-up Trump and other "far right" Republicans with donations and media attention, to force voters to "vote blue no matter who."  I have supported candidates in Democratic presidential primaries, but I felt like there was a difference between voting in a primary and voting for any awful Democrat, just to keep an awful Republican out of office.]

The Black Alliance for Peace's U.S. Out of Africa Network is calling on everyone who supports self-determination in Africa to turn out on Thursday October 24th, at noon, to rally outside the embassies of Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso (all within 3 DC blocks) in a show of support and appreciation to those countries for expelling AFRICOM from their territories, and for their roles in forming the Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). We are demonstrating also to affirm that we will not allow any of these countries to suffer the fate of Libya in 2011 at the hands of NATO led by the U.S.

[American civilian pilot Eugene Burton Ely carried out the first takeoff from a ship, the USS Birmingham, November 14, 1910.  He also carried out the first landing on a ship, the USS Pennsylvania, January 18, 1911.  Ely wanted to join the US Navy, but it didn't have an air corps at the time and then he was killed in a crash October 19, 1911 in Macon, Georgia, just prior to his 25th birthday.  This paved the way for naval aviation and aircraft carriers, which had a role in WWI but were more important in WWII.  It has been argued that aircraft carriers are much less decisive today, for example China probably has the capability to sink US carriers at a distance, though China is also building aircraft carriers.  Aircraft have also been launched from other ship types, such as battleships, including the USS North Carolina, now on display in Wilmington, and even submarines during WWII.]

I'm writing to you about a new film, "Lyd," co-directed by Sarah Friedland and Rami Younis, 

which will be shown at Duke as part of a fall screening series at several US universities. 

The screening is free and open to the public, and will be at Duke's “Ruby.”  

Hareth Yousef, a Palestinian filmmaker who recently got an MFA at Duke, 

will be the discussion leader after the film. Along with deep documentary research, 

the film has speculative "science fiction" elements. Recently "Lyd" was banned 

by authorities on the grounds that it “slandered Israel and its soldiers;’ 

it was not allowed to screen in Jaffa:

LYD provides much-needed context for this moment, as it goes deep 

into the history of the Nakba from the perspective of Palestinians who survived. 

The film imagines an alternate reality where Palestine was never occupied 

and Palestinians of all religions (Muslims, Christians, and Jews) 

live in a liberated Palestine. 

Narrated by Palestinian actress Maisa Abd Elhadi who personifies the city, 

the viewer is guided through the lifespan of a five-thousand-year-old city and its residents.

Griffiss Plowshares

November 24, 1983 (Thanksgiving Day) seven people entered Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, New York and proceeded to hammer and put blood on a B-52 bomber modified to carry cruise missiles and on some B-52 engines.  They left a statement condemning Griffiss and the US government for nuclear war preparation and condemned the violation of constitutional rights and punishment of acts of conscience under what they called the state religion of "nuclearism."  No one came to arrest them for hours, so they searched for the guards themselves.  This was the first Federal trial of Plowshares activists.  A justification defense and expert testimony were barred.  The jury found them innocent of sabotage but convicted them of conspiracy and destruction of government property, with prison sentences of two to three years and an appeal was denied.  This account and the others in this post come from Swords Into Plowshares:  Nonviolent Direct Action for Disarmament, edited by Arthur J Laffin and Anne Montgomery, and published in 1987.  There have been more recent actions.] 

[November 24, 2015 a Turkish F-16 shot down a Russian Sukhoi Su-24M that had allegedly briefly crossed over Turkish airspace from Syria, the first time a Russian or Soviet aircraft had been destroyed by a NATO country's military since the Korean War (in 1953).  There are conflicting accounts of whether the Su-24 entered Turkey, where it was fired upon, and whether the F-16 entered Syria, but the Su-24 crashed in Syria, which had invited the Russian military's presence, unlike the US and Turkish forces still occupying parts of Syria.  The two Russians personnel onboard ejected, but the pilot was hit by Syrian rebel gunfire before landing and killed, a violation of Protocol I of the Geneva Convention.  NATO criminality has increased a great deal since 2015, under Biden-Harris?  According to the Wikipedia article the rebels might have been Turkmen and Turks led by a Turkish citizen and member of the Grey Wolves.  Later a Russian helicopter looking for the crew was forced to land due to rebel gunfire and a naval infantryman was killed.]

Breaking: Massacre in Gaza, Israel Burns Palestinians Alive

Washington, D.C. | www.adc.org | October 13, 2024 - A short while ago Israeli occupation forces launched multiple air attacks, dropping bombs on and around the Al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir al-Baha. The bombings have resulted in an ongoing massacre, as graphic images and pictures show Palestinians being burned alive. Many of the victims are patients at the hospital, and all are displaced Palestinians seeking safety. A few hours prior to this massacre, Israel bombed the Al-Mufti school which was sheltering displaced Palestinians. The school bombing has killed at least 19 people so far, including a baby. 

 

As the genocide and massacres continue, Israel’s unrestrained and calculated brutality against Palestinians and as the besiegement of northern Gaza starts its 10th day of starvation and mass killing, the Israeli regime and its enablers have reached new levels of depravity. Civilians, hospitals, schools, and vital infrastructure are being systematically obliterated, in direct contravention of international laws meant to protect human life. The world is witnessing a humanitarian catastrophe that the Israeli government is perpetrating with clear impunity.

 

The United States is directly responsible for the unfolding massacre at the Al-Aqsa Hospital, and for all the lives lost during this genocide. By continuing to provide unlimited tactical support, vast military aid to Israel and political and diplomatic cover, the U.S. government is not only enabling, but also coordinating and helping execute these atrocities. The Biden-Harris administration’s refusal to intervene decisively to halt Israel’s genocide in Gaza has exposed a willingness to ignore justice, human rights, and the value of human life itself. This reckless disregard for all Palestinian lives has only fueled further violence and emboldened Israel to continue its genocidal march into Lebanon - where thousands have been killed, many more injured, and millions displaced. 

 

A majority of the country and world collectively demands the U.S. government take immediate and definitive action to halt Israel’s genocide, end its support for this brutal occupation and dismantle the apartheid system. Gaza, the West Bank and all of Palestine is in an existential struggle. It is time for the U.S. to recognize its role in this ongoing tragedy and to use its influence to end the bloodshed and hold Israel accountable. 

 

We will continue to demand an immediate halt to this genocide, and an immediate arms embargo of U.S. aid to Israel that enables Israel's aggression. The world has united in unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian and Lebanese people. We demand accountability, justice, and an end to the this carnage once and for all.
