Jordan Lake decision set for the 14th

The Durham County Commissioners have scheduled the decision about redrawing the map of Jordan Lake in response to developer-funded surveys for their September 14th meeting.  If the developer's map, moving the shoreline, and the limited development zones based on it, west along New Hope Creek is approved, then the developer can submit a site plan for the massive 751 South project.  The change effects most of the area west of 751 up to Stagecoach Road and much of the area on Stagecoach, and areas along Farrington and Farrington Mill roads.  This also effects a large area in RTP at the south end of TW Alexander Drive, in the five mile limited development zone, which limits the amount of impervious surface.  A separate project has already been approved on the other side of 751, in an otherwise mostly undeveloped area at the south edge of the County.   

 

The Haw River Assembly and donations funded a competing survey, which used a different methodology, over the summer.  The State's Division of Water Quality, said both surveys are valid and left the decision about what survey to use to the County, which does not have a policy on methodology.  The developer is now sueing the County, and this was allegedly the reason the former County Attorney was fired, because he would not be able to help with the defense.  I wonder if he was fired because he followed the law and got in the way of a developer.  Maybe it is personal, with the same pro-developer result.         

 

Unfortunately the next Triangle Socialist Forum meeting, focusing on the huge influence of business in government, especially in the Jordan Lake issue, is scheduled for the 16th (in the Durham Main Library's third floor conference room, at 7pm).  But even if the decision is made on the 14th, this issue is far from done.
