A loss for freedom in the General Assembly

Yesterday the NC House joined the Senate in appoving Purcell's Senate Bill 138, banning Salvia divinorum plants and extracts (seewww.ncleg.net/gascripts/BillLookUp/BillLookUp.pl?Session=2009&BillID=s138&submitButton=Go). The entire Durham delegation voted yes, even Luebke, who I thought was relatively progressive. I won't be voting for them in the next election. This contrasts with Orange County, where some at least abstained or missed votes, for whatever reason. Possession or use of Salvia and its active chemical has a $25 dollar plus fine and the third offense is a Class 3 misdemeanor, yet they left the aesthetic loophole. Assuming Governor Perdue signs the bill into law, it goes into effect December 1st.

The only local place that I know of that might sell it, in Chapel Hill, refused to cooperate with journalists, not even wanting to give their business hours. Of course there wasn't much opposition, beyond letters to editors, with that policy, which goes beyond self protection.

Time to start growing Salvia "for aesthetic, landscaping, or decorative purposes." It probably has nice flowers judging by its more common relatives. Resist the "War on Drugs," which is really a war on the working class, minorities, and leftists here and abroad.
