A new initiative, Muddy Water Watch (
www.muddywaterwatch.org), is being formed to encourage citizens to report erosion and silt control violations. This should help the beleaguered local erosion control departments and put the developers on notice. Silt pollution was recently in the news (the
N&O) because a citizen and Neuse Riverkeeper just happened to notice a Cary development with (I think) broken erosion controls, letting silt into Kit Creek, a tributary of NE Creek, entering just above the American Tobacco Trail's trestle. Yellow silt flowing from a stream into the dark Neuse River was replayed often on WTVD or WRAL several years ago and in recent years Meeting of the Waters Creek in Chapel Hill, which is otherwise clear, has run opaque yellow from construction at UNC. There is information about the impact of excessive silt on waterways and links to many local authorities and news articles at Muddy Water Watch's website. A volunteer training session is coming up Tuesday evening in Raleigh. Participants might have had to attend an orientation session on the 15th to participate, but I'm not sure, so I'm posting it.
